After Exodus, Britannia enjoyed a relatively long peaceful era. With no creatures bent on world domination or destruction, all seemed right with the world, and the people of Britannia grew content. With Lord British leading them, the land was fruitful and its citizens prosperous. That prosperity brought with it a degeneration of Morality. Lord British drew himself away from the people, and in essence they ruled themselves, causing further decrepitude. Eventually Lord British emerged and proclaimed the 8 virtues, being the definition of a good Britannian life. He knew that defining the virtues would not help the people, and so he decided that he needed a champion of the virtues.

The stranger returned for a fourth time, mastering all 8 of the virtues and balancing them with one another with the help of the Codex of Ultimate Wisdom, he succeeded in becoming the champion of virtues: The Avatar. As the stranger mastered each of the virtues, the anti-virtues were stripped away from him, leaving only pure virtue.

The Stranger becomes The Avatar
Honesty, Honor, Humility, Spirituality, Sacrifice, Justice, Compassion, and Valor. These 8 virtues are the defining quailties of a good life in Britannia. Each virtue has a counter, an anti-virtue. For instance, the opposite of Sacrifice is Covetous. Each of the virtues has a shrine, a mantra, a sigil, a city, a dungeon, a color, a counter, and a companion. If you would like to study the vurtues in more detail, please see the Virtues portion of this site.

During his journies, The Avatar also met some companions who would aid him in his quest, they include: Dupre the Paladin, who represents Honor; Jaana the Druid, who represents Justice; Shamino the Ranger, who represents Spirituality; Mariah the Mage, who represents Honesty; Iolo the Bard, who represents Compassion; Julia the Tinker, who represents Sacrifice; Katarina the Shepherd, who represents Humility; Geofferey the Warrior, who represents Valor. This is the story of Ultima 4.
