There are some things that have titles which make no sense. "Grape Nuts" for instance.. no grapes, no nuts. "Apple Jacks".. no apples, no jacks. "Captain Kangaroo".. no captains, no kangaroos.
Such is the title of Dirge of Cerberus. No Dirges, no Cerberus.. Just everyone's favorite not-vampire wannabe Vincent Valentine.
1 year after Advent Chidren, some evil guys from a top-secret Shinra project are bent on invading places and kicking butts. They're evil, I tell you, and who's in the thick of it? Vincent, that's who!
With his barely adequate melee skills and difficult to control third person shooter standpoint, Vincent mows down enemies one bullet at a time.
Vincent's got some varieties in his weapons, he's got a pistol, a rifle, and a machine gun, each works best in different situations. You can customize your weapons with different barrels and accessories, but the selection is pretty limited.
That being said, nobody's going to play this game for the gameplay. It's not horrible, or bad, it's just.. boring. Lackluster and boring. The real draw here is the storyline.
What can I say about the storyline, it's way better than the gameplay, but not particularly deep or involved. It explains part of Vincent's backstory, tells you the origins of Sephiroth, and what exactly happened to Lucrecia. Otherwise, pretty basic stuff.
Beloved FF7 characters make a reappearance in some form or another. Yuffie is most prevalent, but Cait Sith/Reeve is a major player as well. The other FF7 crew get good service in the form of awesome FMV sequences, with the exception of Red 13, who is strangely absent from the game, except for one scene near the very end.
I'd recommend this one as a rent for people who are curious about the story and the neat FMV's. It's not a good game, but it works alright, and it's not annoying or frustrating.
Overall Score: 5 of 10.
