Bossypants

Crap, I don't have a "book report" icon. It must be on account of the fact that I rarely write a review of a book! So, why Bossypants? I don't really know.

As you can see by the cover.. (holy crap those aren't her real arms!) Bossypants is the newish book by Tina Fey, who everyone remembers as the SNL Sarah Palin Impersonator / 30 Rock lady.

From the title, I expected the book would be about her time managing people as a high-up TV mucketymuck. There is some of that, but it's mainly a loose biography of Tina Fey. It covers her childhood, her parents, her beginnings in comedy, how she got in at SNL, and how she got on at 30 Rock.

Of course, calling it a biography makes it seem a little dull. The book is actually a lot of fun! There's plenty of jokes and amusing anecdotes.

The most interesting part of the book, or at least I thought so, was where she discusses how impersonating Sarah Palin on SNL probably hurt the ratings of 30 Rock.. and I think she's absolutely correct about that. For years I've been trying to get friends and family to watch 30 Rock, but none of them will because it's "That Liberal Show". It got branded in a serious way by those sketches.. at least around these parts.

So, why are people so sensitive to Tina Fey's Sarah Palin, and they don't care about Will Ferrell's George W? Fey asks this question in her book, and seems to conclude that people perceive men and women comedians differently.

The actual answer in my circle is more basic: She spent several years on SNL's Weekend Update doing one-sided left-leaning jokes during the Bush era. This is why the media latched onto Tina Fey as Sarah Palin before the SNL election season even began. Apparently nobody remembered that she moved from SNL to 30 Rock.

Anyway, it's a good book. It's interesting to hear things from an "inside perspective". It's not a long book, but then again it's 12 bucks.

Game of Thrones

All my nerd friends are recommending Game of Thrones to me. It's a HBO series based on a high fantasy novel.. and since it's HBO, it has good production values and decent actors.. like Boromir himself, Sean Bean.

I've only seen the first episode so far, but it seems relatively in-depth. The acting here is top notch, but the story is quite slow. I haven't read the original book, so it's difficult to follow the plot at all.

I'm also having a problem in that none of the characters have distinguished themselves as being anyone I should care about.. except perhaps for Sean Bean himself.

Knowing Sean Bean, I'm sure he's headed for an unfortunate, premature end.

I should also note that this show ALSO contains random uncovered bosoms, though in this case they are limited to a brothel, and to a tribe of marauding barbarians which... sort of makes sense.

So, the jury is still out on this one, but in terms of high fantasy, you could do worse.

Camelot (TV Series)

How many times have we seen the story of Camelot? From First Knight to Stargate to Lord knows how many Merlin shows out there.. not to mention Disney cartoons.

Well, they're doing it again, and when I say "they" I mean the guys who did Spartacus: Blood and Sand. Guess what? This version of Camelot has lots of naked boobs.

Now, don't get me wrong, boobs are awesome, but there's one scene where a girl is out in the forest talking to a demon wolf, and she takes off her dress to talk to it... which begs the question: why?

Are wolves somehow more receptive to naked women?

Camelot portrays King Arthur at a young age, and as a ladies man. Merlin is also portrayed as being young, and nearly completely bald.. he doesn't look or act very wizardly, and makes a lot of unwise choices.. odd for Arthur's most trusted advisor.

The story here is your typical Camelot story. Arthur, Gwinevere, Lancelot.. love triangle, destroys Camelot. Still, it's well acted, and aside from random pointless naked bosoms, it's actually pretty decent.

They still need to work on their sword fights though.

If you're into medieval stuff and are not bothered by weird nudity, check it out.

The Guild (on Netflix)

If you haven't seen The Guild, you absolutely should. It's on Netflix now, so you have no excuse not to!

I don't own The Guild DVD's, so I don't know what format they are in.. however, the Netflix Streaming copies of The Guild are in HD, and they are stitched together without the Sprint ad so that each season plays like one 45 minute episode of a TV series.. which adds a surprising sense of continuity to the show.

Thumbs up!

Body of Proof (pilot)

Body of Proof is a new crime drama procedural on TV!! Why are there so many of these? In an oversaturated marked, does Body of Proof stand out as a hit?

Nope.

Body of Proof is just like Quincy M.E.. if he were a girl.

Pass.

History Channel: Civil War: Secret Missions

Ahh, the History Channel. Dedicated to teaching everyone about obscure and interesting historical facts. Wholesome, good-hearted, and well-meaning.

Secret Missions really does take you back to the past! Not to the Civil War, but to 1999 when First Person Shooters were bland, and textures were drab and uninteresting! Actually, the game plays a lot like the original Unreal.. and looks about as bad.

Which is a shame, because I think there's a market for this type of game if it's done right.

Peter Jackson's King Kong

I don't really know what to say about Peter Jackson's King Kong. It's pretty much the same as the movie, except with a lot more bugs and frustrating puzzles. You play as either a generic guy with a gun, or you play as a nearly uncontrollable Kong. Either way, you're not having much of a good time.

BlazBlue Calamity Trigger / Blazblue Continuum Shift

Two reviews in one! Why? Because they are both the exact same game.

Blazblue is a 2D animated Japan fighter, a lot like Street Fighter 2 except in HD. It's the sort of game where if you get hit up into the air, you're not coming back down alive.

The game has a few different modes, all of which force you into a series of battles. The story mode plays like a Japanese Dating Sim, and the story is uncomprehensible.

All in all, Really not all that much fun.
