Crap, I don't have a "book report" icon. It must be on account of the fact that I rarely write a review of a book! So, why Bossypants? I don't really know.
As you can see by the cover.. (holy crap those aren't her real arms!) Bossypants is the newish book by Tina Fey, who everyone remembers as the SNL Sarah Palin Impersonator / 30 Rock lady.
From the title, I expected the book would be about her time managing people as a high-up TV mucketymuck. There is some of that, but it's mainly a loose biography of Tina Fey. It covers her childhood, her parents, her beginnings in comedy, how she got in at SNL, and how she got on at 30 Rock.
Of course, calling it a biography makes it seem a little dull. The book is actually a lot of fun! There's plenty of jokes and amusing anecdotes.
The most interesting part of the book, or at least I thought so, was where she discusses how impersonating Sarah Palin on SNL probably hurt the ratings of 30 Rock.. and I think she's absolutely correct about that. For years I've been trying to get friends and family to watch 30 Rock, but none of them will because it's "That Liberal Show". It got branded in a serious way by those sketches.. at least around these parts.
So, why are people so sensitive to Tina Fey's Sarah Palin, and they don't care about Will Ferrell's George W? Fey asks this question in her book, and seems to conclude that people perceive men and women comedians differently.
The actual answer in my circle is more basic: She spent several years on SNL's Weekend Update doing one-sided left-leaning jokes during the Bush era. This is why the media latched onto Tina Fey as Sarah Palin before the SNL election season even began. Apparently nobody remembered that she moved from SNL to 30 Rock.
Anyway, it's a good book. It's interesting to hear things from an "inside perspective". It's not a long book, but then again it's 12 bucks.
