Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7
Submitted Saturday, March 29, 2008 - 1:39:09 AM by Klaitu

You know, after playing Dirge of Cerberus, your expectations need to be a little low. I mean, FF7 was an amazing game. It would be hard to live up to its reputation no matter what you did.

Thankfully, Crisis Core isn't as bad as Dirge of Cerberus was. Of course, it's nowhere near as good as the original, either.

The game is well polished, as you might expect from any Square game. The gameplay is alright, it's a fast-paced mix of RPG style and twitch.. its a bit like Kingdom Hearts, if just a bit slower.

The story is remarkably consistant with the original story of FF7. Particularly in sections that were actually shown in FF7. Crisis Core dutifully reconstructs those scenes with the correct dialogue in the appropriate order. Even the 3d design of the Nibelheim Mako Reactor matches the design in FF7.

The game is somewhat short, though. The game is good, but it's not great. I'd recommend a rental on this one.

Overall Score: 6 of 10

Harry Potter Collective
Submitted Monday, March 24, 2008 - 3:41:15 PM by Klaitu

You may recall my previous Harry Potter review, for Chamber of Secrets. At that point, it was the only Harry Potter movie I had managed to see, so I decided to watch the rest of them.

They are:

Harry Potter and the--
Philosopher's Stone
Prisoner of Azkaban
Goblet of Fire
Order of the Phoenix

Chamber of Secrets is number 2 in the series.

I talked about the "Christian Controversy" when I did Chamber of Secrets, so I won't go too much into it here. It's hard for me to watch Harry Potter without it in the back of my mind, simply because of my enviornment. Suffice to say that I didn't find anything that was particularly "dangerous". If your kid understands the difference between movies and reality, then they shouldn't have any problems.

So anyway, you probably already know but Harry Potter is the story of a dorky english kid who happens to be a wizard, and also happens to have a destiny. Everyone makes a big deal out of him surviving an attack from an evil wizard when he was a baby.

This, of course, means that he will have to fight the evil wizard when he grows up.. and unless I miss my quess, that will probably happen in the final book.. I mean, when else is it going to happen?

The plots to all these movies are somewhat formulaic. Harry Potter starts off in the "real world" with his obnoxious adoptive parents. Silly things happen, and then he goes to the "magical world" of Wizard School. While in wizard school, a mystery pops up, and darned if it doesn't take the whole school year to solve! Each of the titles is actually the solution to the mystery. I suppose they are extremely well titled in that sense.

It's easy to forget that Harry Potter is a children's movie.. maybe that's why so many creepy old people hang out at bookstores getting the latest Potter books. With the films, it's easy to be blown away by the production quality, which is somewhere near the level of Star Wars or Lord of the Rings.

Another thing that strikes me is the continuity of the films, particularly in things like sets, effects, and wardrobe. They're all consistant from one film to another.. which I think is simply amazing considering the series has been through different directors.

I also think it's pretty amazing that they don't explain things in the later movies that you should have learned from the previous ones. Things like moving staircase.

In one film, Harry uses a protective spell, and then a film or two later the movie references the spell again, assuming that you know what it is. It doesn't waste time re-explaining its own narrative, which is rare in films.

Oh! Also, Dr. Who is one of the bad guys.

Overall Scores:
Philosopher's Stone: 6 of 10
Prisoner of Azkaban: 5 of 10
Goblet of Fire: 6 of 10
Order of the Phoenix: 7 of 10

Nancy Drew
Submitted Monday, March 24, 2008 - 3:24:06 PM by Klaitu

I watched this movie directly after watching Sweeney Todd. Talk about completely different movies!

Nancy Drew, as you probably know, is based off the series of children's detective books. In that sense, Nancy Drew stays true to the original.

Problem is, Nancy Drew just isn't cool. It doesn't matter how you style it up, she's a square. The idea of Nancy Drew is a relic of a past era.

Nancy Drew might be a great film to recommend to your mom. Or your Aunt. Maybe your grandma.

It's got Bruce Willis in it, though.

Sweeney Todd
Submitted Monday, March 24, 2008 - 3:18:40 PM by Klaitu

Technically, it's Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. If you ask me, I would call it "Johnny Depp is Pale Again: the Musical"

Wasn't expecting a musical.

I am not a big fan of Tim Burton, who directs the movie. I just don't like his style. It was written by John Logan, though.. who did Gladiator, Star Trek: Nemesis, and the Time Machine. I also like Alan Rickman and Johnny Depp.

Unfortunately, like most of Tim Burton's movies, there is no real reason to watch the film. It's difficult to follow what little plot there is.

Here's the entire story: Sweeney Todd is actually an alias. He was once a normal guy who was sent to prison for a crime he didn't commit. When he returns, he finds out that his woman died, so he goes on a revenge killing spree. Turns out that is woman isn't dead, but that doesn't stop her from dying, nor does it prevent Sweeney Todd from being killed either.

With no plot characters alive at the end, one is forced to ask "who cares?"

I'm not sure what the movie is supposed to be. Is it a musical? Is it a Comedy? Is it horror? Is it a slasher flick? You've got me. In the end, the film really has no identity and is bleh in every regard.

Except the costumes and sets. Those were really nice. If only I had some reason to watch them.

Overall Score: 3 of 10

Under Construction!

Alright, so I have everything put together the right way, and I got my news styles back, so everything's the right color in the right order.

The news icons system is broken because the new software doesn't support that, I'm still working on a solution there, but the bottom line is that all of the new posts now have ye olde clipboard in the upper right.

It will probably take me some time to get the RSS going and all that good stuff, so stay tuned!

New Installation!

Hey Everyone! I know things look a little strange right now! That's because I am upgrading Special K!

The new program features RSS feeds and a much slicker interface. It's going to take me some time to work out the kinks, but I'm pretty sure everyone will enjoy it in the end!

Story of the Year

My friends, I have found the most spectacular and amazing story of our time! This time it's from Kansas.

A woman with a fear of leaving her bathroom stayed in the bathroom for over 2 years. She sat on the toilet so long that her skin became molecularly bonded to the seat.

"She was not glued. She was not tied. She was just physically stuck by her body," Whipple said. "It is hard to imagine. ... I still have a hard time imagining it myself."
With something like this, you don't have to take my word for it. Check it out!

Yesterday, I turned in my resignation papers with Hertz. It's been coming for a long time, but I decided to finally go ahead and throw down the papers and make it official.

I've got a lot of friends I'm going to miss up at Hertz, I'd like to stay in touch with them, but I doubt it will happen, that's the way this sort of thing goes. So, I'm happy to be free, but there's still a down side.

I don't know that I have discussed it before, but I'm going to do Cisco Network Administration courses and hopefully improve my career outlook. I'm tired of being on the bottom rung of the career ladder. It's not like CCNA is going to make me into a rich guy, but maybe I'll be able to get a job that doesn't involve toilets, food preparation, or talking to angry people.

This will be a quick couple of reviews, since I don't have the proper time to do things the right way!

1. Grindhouse presents: Deathproof

Cool opening credits. 1.5 hours of dialogue you don't care about. 10 minutes of moderately interesting car chase.

Overall Score: 2 of 10

2. Meet the Spartans

Less than somewhat amusing. Some good ideas, but ultimately a failure.

Overall Score: 1 of 10

3. Jumper

Cool idea, interesting story. It moves a little fast, and the story seems unsatisfying near the end.

Overall Score: 6 of 10

4. John Adams

Mass Effect
Submitted Monday, March 3, 2008 - 3:15:17 PM by Klaitu

What a wonderful game!

I guess I sort of give the whole review away in that sentence, but allow me to elaborate.. Mass Effect is the sort of game that only comes around once every decade.

Mass Effect feels like the spiritual successor to Star Control or Future Worlds 1. There's an RPG element, and also an exploration element, but I'm getting ahead of myself.

In Mass Effect, it's been 26 years since Humans discovered alien life. The aliens have already established a near-galaxtic government.. akin to Star Wars. Humans want to get in on the governmental action, but are seen as newcomers to the galactic scene.

The plot involves a group called the Spectres. It's a secret agent group that operates for the galactic government. The Spectres are given pretty much unilateral authority to do whatever they want. That's where you come in.

Throughout the game you are given options to respond in a fair manner, or a ruthless manner. Sometimes it doesn't really matter, sometimes you can avoid a fight by going one way or the other. Sometimes the result is the same, but how you get there is different.

You've got a ship called the Normandy, it's flown by Seth Green, which is pretty cool. When you're not pursuing the plotline missions, you're free to explore the galaxy. You can survey planets, track down asteroids to mine, and even land on some planets.

Turns out the universe is chock full of bad guys hiding out on backwater planets.

If you keep up on these things, you'll note that Mass Effect was recently the subject of a big "sex scandal". Yep, that's right, one of the romantic plots culminates in a sex scene. In fact, that's probably the reason the game has an M rating.

As someone who has seen the sex scene, I'm going to have to give a big thumbs down to the people making a big deal out of it. It's similar to the sex scene in Top Gun, except it lasts about 30 seconds, and it doesn't show any "parts". It's actually quite stylish.

Voice acting throughout the game is tremendous! It's got a lot of people you've heard of before.. Seth Green, Marina Sirtis, Armin Shimerman, Dwight Schultz.. it's even got Lance Henriksen in it. Whos Lance Henriksen? He's Bishop from Aliens. That's who!

Anyways, even the people you've never heard of before do a great job, most of the voice actors have a huge video game voiceover list. At no point did I feel the voice acting was hammy.

Mass Effect, while being a great game, does have some flaws though.

Perhaps it's just my Xbox, but the game kept freezing for me. With the game in the vertical position, it would freeze up once every 10 minutes or so. In the horizontal position it would freeze once every 6 hours. I don't know that this is a problem with the game itself, but it certainly impacted my gameplay. Consoles are supposed to be stable, and mine isn't.

The game as a whole lacks polish. I get the sense that the developers ran out of time or money, and needed to get a completed product on the shelves. They did a very good job prioritizing the stuff that "needed" doing, and the stuff that was less important. At least, that's how the game feels.

In Example: the gameplay is great. Most of your time you and your squad will be taking down aliens in a sort of Gears of War/Uncharted playstyle that works amazingly wall. However, you'll be doing this combat in one of about 6 different structures that the game has. It gets pretty repetitive when you enter a new area and automatically know the layout.

The Graphics look great, but they're not always fully loaded. Sometimes it takes a minute or two for the game to get all the detail in there. This doesn't affect the gameplay much, but you're going to notice it.

The Sounds are a mixed bag. The chosen sound effects are great picks. They sound like you would expect without going over the top. The sound balance, however, is horrible. It's sometimes impossible to hear important characters speaking because there are sound effects or music that are played over the top of them. Fortunately, you can adjust at least the music downwards so you can hear more clearly.

The soundtrack.. Well, I want to say something positive here, but quite honestly, the soundtrack is weak. There's no need for such a crap soundtrack in a game like this. It's another thing that seems like they ran out of time on.

The.. spaceflight system is certainly a major hitch in the otherwise excellent gameplay. You choose your destinations via a very well constructed holographic map. It looks pretty neat, but it's really only a fancy level select menu. In a future installment, I'd like to fly the actual ship, or barring that at least watch the ship fly to its destination. As it stands, you click, watch a loading screen, then select your party. Lots of untapped potential here.

My biggest complaint with the game is how short it is. There are 8 main plot quests and maybe a hundred side-plot quests. I completed every single one of them (except the collections quests) in under 25 hours of gameplay time. In a game about space exploration, this shouldn't happen.

Then there are the little things:

- In the entire galaxy there are maybe 10 outfits that people wear.

- All Humans wear the same clothes.

- Everyone who has hair either has it buzzed short, or it's glued to their head.

- Mass Effect is home to the world's slowest elevators. The elevator in your own spacecraft is ridiculously slow, taking nearly a full minute to go one floor.

- You spend quite a bit of time in your planetary rover, but unlike most other things in the game, it can't be customized or upgraded.

- Whoever designed the armor had some pretty atrocious color choices in mind. White and Pink? For a space marine? Come on!

Anyway, having said all that, Mass Effect is still a great game! I highly recommend it, and hopefully whenever they make Mass Effect 2 they'll be able to put more bells and whistles in.. and a soundtrack that isn't useless.

Personally I'd like to be able to scan down ships within a solar system, knock down their defenses with my ship, and then board the ship for either piracy purposes or "stopping evil cargo" purposes.

Here's looking at you, Mass Effect 2!

Overall Score: 8 of 10
