The Story of Lord British is one of the most in-depth and complex in all of Britannia. You see, Lord British is not from our native Sosaria.. no, he is from another realm called "Earth". This Earth is said to have many technological wonders, but they have almost no knowledge of magic.

Such was young Garriott when he entered our realm. He had found a magical serpent medallion which opened a moongate between our realms. There he met Shamino and with his aid and alien way of thinking created a new city-state.. the city-state of Britain.

When Mondain held Sosaria in his grasp, Lord British called forth another from his native land to help combat the menace. They call him "The Stranger" for he never revealed his name. The Stranger was indeed successful in his task, and Lord Britishes popularity soared. His ideas of peace and unity were unheard of at the time, and the larger city-states all united into one Kingdom: Britannia

Lord British then faced more domestic problems than anything else. His people grew more and more discontent with their own lives, and there was seemingly no end to the cycle. Again, he called forth an old friend from Earth to aid him. This mans name was Lord Blackthorn. Together they were able to keep the populace in order.

Then, sometime near the year 100 Lord British had a visitation by Hawkwind, the Time Lord. Hawkwind told Lord British that he was merely a duplicate of the real Lord British.. that his kingdom and all he knew existed only as a reflection of what really was. Perhaps as consolation, Hawkwind related to Lord British knowledge of the virtues.. citing them as the only way to reunite the shards.

This news disheartened Lord British, though it give him new fervor to promote the 8 virtues. He ordered the 8 shrines constructed and tried to promote Order through the formation of the Order Guard. The people were not responding to the situation at all, and Lord British became even more frustrated.

As a last ditch effort, Lord British opened the call for immigrants from Earth. Eventually, several hundred Earthlings made the transition to Britannia and began to intermingle with Britannian Society. This did not help the situation with the virtues, or with the Order guard.. but it did help reduce the monster population, as the new Earthlings proved quite adept at beating them back.

Perhaps spurred on by this immigration, the Followers of Armageddon declared the world corrupt and set about remaking it. For a time, the world was on the brink of disaster. When the Followers prematurely cast their Ritual of Armageddon, Lord British sent exploring parties throughout the realm, and into the Lost Lands.

All was not quiet for long, as Britannia was again under seige.. this time by Mondains apprentice and lover, Minax. To Lord British, the opposing forces seemed insurmountable. He set about creating a facet with a foundation of virtue.. and with help from Nystul, he was able to create Trammel.. the "perfect" gift for his people. A place without war or conflict, a place that Minax could never touch.

The people didn't like Trammel.

The Council of Mages felt threatened by the casting of the spell to create Trammel, and they became more and more adamant that Lord British should step down as ruler of Britannia. They favored calling forth the Stranger once again to deal with the threat.

Lord British had not realized the terrible price of his decision, and his people began to revolt. Lord British himself went to Trammel, where most of his loyal subjects had already gone. In his name, the True Britannians swore to defend Britannia in Felucca to the last man. That fight continues today.

In recent years, Lord British has seemed much more a shell of a man.. a tortured soul. Perhaps he could not bear to see his beloved kingdom grow decrepit. Perhaps he could not bear the thought that his people could revolt against him when his actions were meant to protect them.

Either way, Lord British abdicated his throne in the year 343 and left via moongate for parts unknown. Nobody knows if he will return one day to his beloved land, but the lineage he built shall remain forever.
