Anouncement from the High Court
Submitted Thursday, August 28, 2003 - 12:16:02 PM by Nick Seafort

Nick SeafortThe High Court would like to announce the appointment of two new councilors to the High Council this past Monday. Both new councilors were voted upon by the current councilors in attendance, and sworn in by the Justicars office in accordance to the charter during the High Council meeting this past Monday. Blair shall be sitting as the new councilor for Minoc representing the virtue of Sacrifice. Alain shall be representing the virtue of Honor and the city of Trinsic. Unfortunately, due to the current occupation of Trinsic Alain shall be forced to represent Trinsic as a councilor in exile. Decisions on the other open council positions have been delayed due to the other applicants being unable to attend last weeks council meeting. Please join me in welcoming the newest High Council members.

As a reminder the High Council meets every Monday in a public session in the north dining room of Lord British’s Castle at 8 P.M. CST. Orderly public attendance is welcome.

High Court Announcement
Submitted Tuesday, August 12, 2003 - 1:04:00 PM by Nick Seafort

Nick SeafortStatement from the High Court

Justice…. So often it is viewed as punishment for wrong doing. Of course you may say, justice is righting a wrong that has been done, and punishing the wrongdoer. When a murder is committed, the guilty must be punished. When a theft takes place, once again the Justice system steps in and applies the appropriate penalties to the person who committed the act. Justice is called upon at the darkest of times often to justify another wrong in an attempt to make a right. Lynch mobs, Hangings, Imprisonment are often used under the name of Justice. Of all the virtues, Justice is most often thought of last and then only mainly only in terms of retribution.

As Acting High Justicar for the High Council I would like to give you my one word definition of Justice…. Fairness. Treating those around you with the same level of respect and compassion that you would want them to give you is justice to me. From an official definition: The upholding of what is just, especially fair treatment and due reward in accordance with honor, standards, or law. The root of the word comes from the word just which has the following definition: Honorable and fair in one's dealings and actions.

Of course there our other ways to define Justice, but these words most closely fit my feelings as a former Monk dedicated to the virtue of Compassion. Of course we do not live in an utopist world where everyone is good and kind to one another. There is a place for a retributive Justice in our society. However, many of the actions that build up to the point where we need to assign punishment and blame can be avoided. That is why I would like to expand the services of the High Court to offer mediation services to help to avoid the need to assign so much punishment.

The idea is simple, time permitting with current case load; I offer my services to parties in dispute to sit down to non-binding arbitration to try to resolve their differences. The court would act as a mediator to listen to both sides, and try to ferret out compromises that both sides can accept. In doing this perhaps a middle ground can be found where both sides can feel satisfied that Justice is being done. Of course if mediation does not work the traditional court system is always available to bring formal charges.

Please feel free to contact me.

The Post that was about UO, but not

Nick SeafortI used the "exclusive" Icon because it's cool, and I never get to use it anymore. I hope you enjoy it.

As you can tell from the lack of news posts here, the recent Age of Shadows expansion, coupled with the release of Star Wars Galaxies, Knights of the Old Republic, and the buzz for Warcraft (among other things) has conspired to turn the once golden RP community on GL into a post-apocalyptic survivors-only version of itself.

I am one of those stricken, I did not survive the armageddon.. but I don't have any hard feelings about it. my 6 years playing UO were some of the best gaming I have ever done. Sure, UO is dated.. has crummy graphics, incessant lag problems, and next to no customer support.. but none of that mattered, it was great playing with the community. I made some great friends, slayed some dragons.. had a lot of fun.

I think that the domino affect played a role in my own personal decision to play UO.. Age of Shadows was released.. some people liked it, others didn't, but most of the people I know didn't like it, and so they played UO less and less, and eventually quit and moved to better things. Since it can be said that without people, UO is a pretty drab game, the life left UO, and so I went with those people, my friends, who moved on to better things.

But this post is not so much for me to wail and carry on about the good-ol days, I'd like to hear what you guys have to say.. you know, you old-timers. Maybe you quit UO long ago, maybe youre still playing. Come on back one last time and let us know about your times in UO, both good and bad.
