Nick SeafortThe Salvation of Azog

Event Type: PvM with RP Theme
Day: Thursday, May 29th
Time: 7:00 pm CST (Expedition Departs at 7:15 CST)
Location: Meet at Skara Fair Grounds (Trammel)

From Ra'dain, High Chancellor of Britannia

"...the Azog running around is the ghost of a daemon who has taken control of him."

In order to free Azog Deathroar, King of the Goblin Horde, the sword Urss Beless must be recovered. The Ancient Sword is sacred to Goblin kin. Goblin legend contends the sword has the power to drive daemons and other evil spirits from the body when a mortal blow is struck. The killing blow leaves the mortal body of the victim near death while expelling the invading entity.

The Goblins beleive the sword lies in the hands of a Deamon deep within the depths of Hythloth and it is there we shall go, to seek the Salvation of the fallen goblin King.

All citizens and adventures wishing to join the expedition please meet at the Skara Fairgrounds, from there we shall gate to Hytholth and explore the dangerous dungeon. The expedition shall begin at the top and work down into its depths. Afterwards those brave adventures who make this perilous journey are invited to Minoc to join in a large feast.

Expedition Leader,

Chris of Germania, General of the Ankh Legionnaires

Summons to War
Submitted Tuesday, May 27, 2003 - 11:44:08 AM by Nick Seafort

Nick SeafortFrom Lore Denin:

Into the Depths of Hylothe (PvM Scenerio)
Day: Thursday, May 29th
Time: 7:00 pm CST (Expedition Departs at 7:15 CST)
Location: Meet at Skara Fair Grounds

Seige of Cove(PvP Scenerio,If necessary)
Day: Saturday, May 31st
Time: 8:00-10:00pm CST
Location: Cove (Goblins and allies inside the city/ Britannian forces outside)

The Story: Summons to War

After staring at the entrails of animals and the various bones and rocks for hours the grand shaman Grathis Hexhurler approached the Great Goblin Azog Deathroar

"I have seen the outcome of the battle oh truly tremendous one if we fortify our position in the town of Orodruin(cove) it will be both a great victory and a horrific defeat" the shaman said.

The Great Goblin was lost in thought for a bit, "Very well we will fortify our positions if the humans want a war than its war they will get" he yelled as he grasped a most ancient ring with markings long forgotten (a ring given by the Vam'Tragg -Vam'Tragg is goblish for vampire-) he turned to face his generals "go and find our kind and those who would wish to aid us in our holding of the town

"Shaman erect a wall so there forces may not enter we must now prepare for the coming battle let not one smith nor one fletcher sleep till we are fully geared"

Lore Denin and Jakob Covenant sat quietly after the High Council meeting discussing military options to present to the Grand Marshall. After learning of the Azog Deathroar’s betrayal, the High Council demanded swift action against the goblin invaders, recently considered allies to Britannia.

Lore looked to Jakob and nodded. Pending the Grand Marshall’s approval, they would send an expedition to Hythloth while the Highland Guard and Ankh Legionnaires prepared to retake Cove. If the Hythloth expedition was unsuccessful in learning of the demonic curse and reversing its effects by sunset the next day, the forces would storm Cove in an attempt liberate it from Goblin control.

“Strength and Honor” Jakob stated with a salute as was the Highlanders customary farewell

“Till All Are One” Lore responded, as General Covenant departed to focus on the mission ahead.

Lore remained a few moments, pondering the events that had transpired. He had only a few moments to himself as his thoughts were disturbed by the sound of magical transport.

“Lore, I bring urgent news from Cove?” Absent was Messengers usual smile, "The goblins have erected a magical barrier over the city. We can not invade, not until we find a way to bypass it.”

Lore put his hand to his chin, visible distressed after hearing the news. “Let us contact the Lycaeum, perhaps the scholars who helped us bypass the Atalan shield can help solve this mystery as well." Lore paused for a moment and continued, "First I must inform General Covenant and Grand Marshall Tenebrae about the change in circumstance."

“What of the expedition into Hythloth?” Messenger asked, her focus unwavering.

“We will continued as planned. The situation may work to our advantage and give us time to discover the truth about Azog Deathroar.”

BasilWell, I don't know what to say. I'd like to jump up and down screaming every word I have learned in my stewardship of twenty years in the art known as 'cussing', but I can't. I'd like to whip out my virtual dick and virtually piss all over uo.com, but I can't. I'd like to wipe my ass with a check for $12.95 and send it to OSI, but I can't, Homeland Security would crash my house looking for whoever was transporting biological weapons.

I guess the most I can do is give them my Klaitu friendly bird.

You have to congratulate OSI though. I actually thought something was going to change for once with the Lake Austin Project. There was going to be roleplay, and it was more than likely going to be fun. We dodged some of the key problems that Great Lakes had out of game, no message boards, and the out of game council was very balanced with it being Cornelius, Tenebrous, Trugagh, Nero, and myself.

It just seemed to me that stuff was going to change. 36 people had signed up, over 70 had ICQ'd me expressing intrest about testing it or playing the final version if the test went well. Some people say thats a low number. Yes, Great Lakes has over 500 roleplayers, but I would take 36 true roleplayers in a true roleplaying enviroment over 500 roleplayers running around like chickens with their heads cut off. I didn't know all 36 personally, hell, I'd say I disliked or was disliked by 20 of them. I just knew from previous experiences these people were roleplayers and really wanted to roleplay.

Most of them were like me, they were tired of hearing how someone looted someone, Lilly stealing who knows how much gold from Trinsic, or that cities had the right the ignore roleplay. They just wanted to roleplay. About 15 of us gave those people an outlet to really roleplay without having to worry about the damn boards.

But, OSI saw to it that it never happened. As soon as this news broke, two of the key people involved had quit UO, and another was already looking to sell his account. I don't even have a clue as to how bad the effect will be among the testers.

Pretty much, the Lake Austin project was killed in its current form. Several people have suggested a private shard, but I doubt that a private shard could ever achieve what we hoped to achieve.

I mean really, what the hell was OSI thinking? Their game isn't worth $12.95. If I wanted to pay $12.95, I'd go somewhere where at least the pixel crack looks good. Better customer service? I don't want better customer service, I wanted paid seers, but that was too much to ask for.

I'll tell you where that extra $3.00 is going. Its going right into the pockets of Electronic Arts. There won't be better service, and there sure as hell won't be any seers. Yet, Electronic Arts is right. More people are going to stick with Ultima Online than those that are going to quit, its that simple. This is like all the previous points where people would shout, "this is the death knell for Ultima Online." Its not. Its not even close. Ultima Online will be around for another two years, if not even more.

Ultima Online will be around until it takes money out of the Electronic Arts' pocket. Electronic Arts is making the right gamble in thinking that the $3.00 hike is going to offset those that quit over it. They'll look at those that quit as people that were going to quit anyway. They'll label those people the ones that were always bitching on the uo.com boards. Thats how their minds will be at ease.

I reactivated my account for the Lake Austin Project. No doubt, within a few weeks, my account will be closed again. I thought something good could be done for once. Something that wouldn't lead to everyone rolling over to the Thunderdome or High Council Public board. So really, the one thing that brought me back, has no meaning anymore...

...And if there is no meaning, there is no point to paying.

Didn't want to, felt like I had to

Nick SeafortRight, so you guys don't see a lot of rants from me, and when you do theyre not very frequent.. but Happenings today got my attention:

The Ultima Online monthly service rate will change from $9.95 per month to $12.99 per month on June 25, 2003. The purpose for the rate change is to continue to increase the quality of service we deliver to you. However, to make the change easier for you, we're also introducing two multi-month discount packages. The two new service rate packages being introduced on June 25th follow:

- 3 Month Prepaid Discount Package - $34.99
- 6 Month Prepaid Discount Package - $59.99

By choosing our new 6-month discount package you can keep your monthly rate at $9.99 per month - maintaining your rate where it is right now!

I'm sure you guys recieved similar E-mails.

Alright, so I'm a forgiving sort.. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt here, but I have some problems with this..

1. UO is 6 or 7 years old now.. I mean, have you played this game recently? Why should I play UO when it is technically inferior to most other MMO's and is now the same price?

2. The reason for the price increase is "increase the quality of service we deliver to you". Certainly, the Ultima Online service could use some improvement, but they've had 6 years now to improve it, and it hasn't happened yet. Forgive me if I am a bit skeptical. Given the choice between cheap crappy service, and expensive crappy service.. I choose the cheap flavor.

3. Do we remember when AOL did a rate hike from 19.95 to 21.95? It happened in early 1998 if I recall correctly, and the reason for that hike was "to improve service". I ask you: in the 5 years since have you ever heard anyone say "Gee, the AOL service sure has improved!" or "Wow, I thought that rate hike was bad at the time, but now I am glad it happened!" Of course not, AOL still puts out the same amount of suckiness, it just costs more now.

4. Do we remember when Seers and Counselors were around, and they got free accounts? Do we remember what happened when that "free account" thing went away?

As a keen observer of the past, allow me to predict the future:

Some people will quit UO.. it won't be tons of people, but it will be enough so that Ebay makes a decent profit from it.

Less people will buy UO off the shelf. Let's face it, you have Star Wars Galaxies, World of Warcraft, Matrix Online, Everquest 2, and Ultima Online on the same shelf, they cost the same, and you know nothing about any of them. You look at the back of the box. Which one would you pick?.

The Ultima Online service will not improve. In fact, we will be lucky if it stays at it's current level. As I mentioned before, EA has had 5 years now to "improve service". If it were going to happen it would have happened already.

But I digress, my rant won't help anything.. even if I were to post it up on a development board.. oh, whats that? There are no development boards anymore?

Yeah, hows that for service.

Discuss amongst yourselves, I'm a litttle beclempt.

Lake Austin Start-up Date Postponed
Submitted Wednesday, May 21, 2003 - 8:26:24 PM by Basil

BasilDue to circumstances beyond my control or the control of several other people in the Lake Austin Project.

The starting date has been moved from this Sunday at 6 cst to next Sunday, June 1st, at 6 cst.

While I consider this a not so good thing, it will give many who are still debating between several classes more time to decide.

And yes, most of the history is still scheduled to be posted some time tommorow.

Enjoy the week!

More Quest for Trinsic

Nick SeafortQuest for Trinsic, Shipment of Supplies

Day: Tuesday May 20th
Time: 7:45pm CST, (Departing Skara Docks at 8:15 CST)
Location: Meet at the Skara Fair Grounds
Event Type: Boat Trip to Trinsic with RP Theme

Special Note: Dress in a white robe(death robe) if you wish to take the boat into Trinsic

On Tuesday evening we shall set sail from the Skara Docks and bring much needed relief to the people of Trinsic. Any citizens willing to donate food or simple supplies for the people of Trinsic, please meet at the Skara Fair Grounds. We shall load the ship from there. Anyone who wishes to join the voyage is welcome and can aid in the distribution of supplies. We ask all those who intend to travel to Trinsic wear white robes, as those are the terms of the current occupiers.

Virtue Keep you, Till All Are One

Lore Denin, Ankh of Unity, OI--

A Recap of last nights events:
Citizens packed the Skara Brae Fairgrounds, men and women had assembled from all parts of Britannia, ready to lend their arms to aid the people of Trinsic. The mission was a dangerous one, one that would lead them to Ilshenar and against one of the Champions of Sosaria.

The large group arrived at the gate of Valor and quickly headed to the white marble bridge. There, they gathered, making final preparations to armor and weapons. A loud battle cry erupted from the ground as they marched into the heart of the dangerous land, to a stone outcropping where a stone altar stood, signifying the resting place of a Champion of Sosaria. Teams of adventurers quickly divided up and set out into the wilderness, battling the evil that inhabited the wood. As the hordes of evil were vanquished red skulls began to appear on the altar. Soon the altar was covered and dark winds began to stir.

A mist settled and a large form appeared; Rikktor, one of the legendary champions. His evil rippled through the air and he turned his eyes on the invaders and then his fury.

After a hard fought battle the Champion was defeated. The remains of the fallen champion were taken directly to the Lycaeum to the scholars, who need the component to finish the magical preparations that would allow the ship to cross through the magical barrier surrounding Trinsic. The ship would be carrying food and other basic supplies in an effort to bring relief to the citizens who were in desperate need in these troubled times.

An Apology: It has come to my attention that a few who gathered last night for the hunt did not feel welcome and left the event before it got underway. I want to personally apologize to anyone who felt they were unwelcome. These events are open for all players and are meant to be fun for all. I understand that things can be confusing when large crowds gather and I am more then happy to speak with anyone that has questions. I further wish to ensure no one feels unwelcome at these events and ask that if you are having difficulties at any point, please icq me at the number below. Thanks Again, Lore (ICQ: 96629882)

Quest for Trinsic

Nick SeafortDay: Monday May 18th
Time: 7:45pm CST, (Departing Fair Grounds at 8:15 CST)
Location: Meet at the Skara Fair Grounds
Event Type: Champion Spawn with RP Theme (PVM, non-pvp)

The Armies of the Shadow Collective are in control of Trinsic, after last months surprise attack. With support from the Britannian government cut off, the food supplies have dwindled and the people grow hungry. The Shadow Collective has erected magical barriers which prevent ships from entering the harbor as a measure against attack but which has significantly reduced the amount of supplies flowing into the conquered city.

After weeks of dedicated study, a few scholars from the Lycaeum believe they have found a way to dispel this magical barrier, long enough to allow a single ship to enter.

This is a call to all available citizens to join in this Quest of aid for the people of Trinsic. Be thee a High Mage, Lord Knight, Tamer, or new to this land, we are calling on all who are willing and able to lend a hand in this desperate time of need.

The Quest will take us to Ilshenar, where one of the Champions of Sosaria is rumored to dwell. It is this champion who holds the key to unraveling the Collective's magical barrier and our hope we can defeat this vile creature and bring much needed relief to the people of Trinsic.

Virtue Keep You,
Till All Are One,

The Lake Austin Project
Submitted Saturday, May 17, 2003 - 2:51:28 PM by Basil

BasilAfter I posted the other day on the front page, I got a few ICQ's of people asking what it was. The thought that people never read the message boards never crossed my mind. Though I sometimes wish I was more like them, seeing as the message boards seem to be the great daemon that haunts GLRP. We have reached the number of people we need, but we are open to letting more people in. I will briefly explain and point those of you interested in the right direction.

The Lake Austin Project was a project conceived by five people, it quickly grew to around 15 people putting in ideas and such. After a few weeks, a formal proposal was drafted. Lake Austin, for its lack of rp community, and well lack of people at all, was selected to be the test shard.

What does the LA Project plan to offer?

*An in game experience only. Once the project starts, there will be no message boards or a #glrpc equivalent for people to get in arguments in.

*A new way of dealing with death, the chance of a permanent death, which is hoped to deter the mindless bank raiding PvP with the mentality of "kill kill kill"

*Class system. No more tank mages. People have to pick a class and stick with that class. Restrictions will keep them from becoming over powerful.

*OOG Council. No more bickering between the guilds. One council controls the whole community. If someone breaks the rules, that council will decide and their decision will be final.

*The rest can be found here.

Lake Austin IRC Meeting
Submitted Friday, May 16, 2003 - 5:05:14 PM by Basil

BasilFor those that have signed up, or wish to sign up, for the Lake Austin project, there will be a meeting in IRC on Sunday.

It will be at 8 cst and will be in #lap.

Basically the OOG Council will be there to help answer questions, get you setup for the start next Sunday, and get your character names/classes from you.

So far no one has ICQ'd any of us about wanting to schedule a meeting in game because they can't make IRC. So for now, there will be no meeting in game. If that changes, it will be posted.

If you would like to use IRC, but have no clue, to attend the meeting, Ferrico has set up a nice helpful site. You can find it here.

See you on Sunday.

BasilKlaitu has been grateful enough to allow us to use the Herald to post news reports about the Project for those involved twice a week.

Since message boards will not be allowed during the project, the Herald will act as an updating source for each side twice a week. This is for those that don't play every set day of the scenario and would rather not use IRC or ICQ to get an update.

Everyone needs to thank Klaitu for being such a nice guy.

Report on the Shadow Collective
Submitted Wednesday, May 14, 2003 - 3:04:26 PM by Nick Seafort

Nick Seafort Attacks by the Shadow Collective occurred last evening against the towns of Minoc and Whispering Winds.

Our forces were given the Order to remain out of Trinsic, to allow a diplomatic effort. If you are conducting or planning to conduct negotiations you must not continue these talks while they continue their terror on Britannia and its people. The city of Trinsic is firmly in their grasp and these incursion into Minoc and Whispering Winds do not give me confidence that they will stop with the City of Honor. As Marquis of Minoc and Legion Commander of the Ankh, I urge the High Council not to begin talks until these incursion into other areas of Britannia cease. We can not parley with an enemy that continues to subject our Kingdom and people to fear and death.

I humbly ask the Council to take a strong stand in this matter. Do not begin talks until they withdraw from Trinsic and reinstate the legitimate authorities and officials. That would be an act of good faith and demonstrate the Collective's willingness to find a true diplomatic end to the situation and not create a situation where they can use the people and city of Trinsic as a bargaining chip.

I went to Trinsic to speak with the Atalans in person, after the Attacks on Minoc and Whispering Winds. I went unarmed and was escorted to speak with Asimov and Death Charge.

I will state this plainly, this goes deeper then just a burial ground, this is vengeace for 1400 years of oppression. What Britannia has done specifically, I can not say. Only that whatever reasons they give can not justify their actions against Trinsic and its people.

I have little doubt that they will not leave, they will not change and they will never obey laws that are not their own. We learned this when Dunamis spoke with them years ago and it remains the same today.

I have sent Vlandra, Destiny, Silthanis all have made similar reports. The Atalan seem to justify whatever action they commit based on their own interests and disregard any who disagree. If any agreement is reached in Trinsic it will only last as long as it serves the Atalan view, They will continue to take for as long as we allow.

Till All Are One,

Lore Denin, Marquis of Minoc, Ankh of Unity.

First State of the Kingdom Address

Ra'Dian Fl'GithFor those who were unable to attend the first State of the Kingdom address given last Wednesday in the Northwest Courtyard of Castle Britain by Chancellor Ra'Dian Fl'Gith, the text of the speech has been made available to the public.

Greetings, Citizens of Britannia, and thank you for joining me here this evening. Tonight marks the first of what I hope to be many changes in the interaction between the High Council I am proud to be a part of, and the peoples of this great Kingdom that I am proud to serve.

When I first came to this Council as representative of Magincia, I did not know nor expect that one day I would be seated as the Chancellor of Virtue. Throughout my days however, one goal has not changed: to see the High Council better serve the governments and citizens that Britannia is comprised of...

Winds of Change
Submitted Thursday, May 1, 2003 - 9:12:31 PM by Nick Seafort

Nick SeafortFrom Lore Denin:

Hundreds, perhaps thousands of years have passed in the world known as Sosaria since defeat of Mondain, when the Gem of Immortality was shattered and its curse released upon the World. Lord British, the King that united Sosaria under the flag of virtue and forged the great Kingdom of Britannia has long been missing. Lord Blackthorn, his once a trusted friend turned political adversary, is no longer. Destroyed by his lust for power, fallen even from his political theories of Anarchy.

The tenets of both, lost through time and bloodshed. The Shattered Legacy nothing more then myth, a legend of which few know and less speak.

The symbolic institutions of Order and Chaos, battling to determine Sosaria’s eternal fate, disbanded. Scattered and missing, the philosopher knights, who once preached the independent fate of worlds or countered with the truth of unity and the restoration of worlds United.

The establishments gone, the battle over, the eternal fate of Britannia... determined?

The Winds of Change are blowing and those who believe the battle has ended in a stalemate do not understand the philosophies nor the stakes. For in failing to unravel the Shattered Legacy, Order has fallen short and Chaos shall reign supreme, forevermore in Sosaria, or so the Lost King and proponents of Order would argue.

And so, as the page turns on the Britannia of the past and a new one opens, Fate’s hand gives pause…

The battle is not over yet. For there are still those who may yet have strength to champion the ways of Order. One such group, The Ankh of Unity, remains. Predicated on the teachings of Virtue and the truth of the Legacy, the Ankh will never abandon the philosophies of Lord British nor the prophecy of the Timelord. It is written,

“Through Virtue, Britannia may resonate so purely with its mirrored selves as to restore the land to its true time; whole and free from the curse of the Gem of Immortality. “

Three great leaders of the Ankh’s past have returned, in this time of uncertainty, Lady Destiny, Lady Messenger, and Lore Denin. Standing along side Shadarious Hawk, The Ankh of Unity stands united for the first time in many years, preparing for Britannia’s ultimate battle, and its eternal fate.
