High Council and Server Patch
Submitted Monday, April 30, 2007 - 1:16:19 PM by Nick Seafort

Nick Seafortfrom Ra'Dian Fl'Gith:

As most of you are aware, EA is publishing all of the shards with UO:KR server code, which started at 9:00 AM PDT (that's 11:00 AM CDT, noon EDT), and is estimated to take 8 hours. That's 7:00 tonight CDT.

There's also a 57MB patch that everyone's going to have to have in order to log in.

And this is all presuming everything goes okay.

I will, like I'm sure most others will as well, attempt to make it to the meeting. If, due to extreme lag, the unavailability of the shard, lack of patch, or other circumstances, the meeting is unable to be conducted this evening, the meeting will be postponed until next Monday, the next regularly scheduled meeting of the High Council.

If this occurs, and there are items of extreme import that need to be handled prior to the next meeting, please contact me, and we'll work through them in some manner.

Viva la EA. Let the revolution begin...

In a nutshell, there's a large patch coming on Monday that is supposed to take 8 hours to complete. As a result, events planned for Monday may be cancelled or moved.

Right now the only rescheduled event is the RKB Leadership Ceremony, which will now take place on Wednesday, May 2.

More updates as they come in!

Decisions over Dinner
Submitted Sunday, April 29, 2007 - 6:05:04 PM by Nick Seafort

Nick SeafortFrom BNN:

The roast pig was nearly gone. Gristle and bone were scattered wildly about the tabletop, but the figure seated before it all didn’t seem to care about the mess. The Unicorn’s Horn was all but deserted at this hour, with only a few of the day laborers drinking at the bar. Who but other nobles would dare question a nobleman’s table manners?

The door at the far end of the tavern opened with a snap and a guardsman quickly strode through. He gazed about the room until he found the sharply dressed, slightly overweight man sitting in the corner, and walked over.

“Milord Francesco.”

“Avery,” Francesco motioned at the seat across from him. The messenger nodded, but remained standing at attention.

“Sir, reports about the blackrock in Haven continue to come in. It’s the largest vein on record.”

“Mmhmm…,” he paused to chew on this, “And those traders? How did they get wind of it?”

“We don’t know, milord. The mine was sealed off well before they got there – even the townspeople don’t know about it. But they’re still buying up all the blackrock they can find. We sent out a general warning advising people to be wary of them, but it’s had little effect.”

“Oh?”

“The city’s packed, sir. Inn was full, ended up camping outside town.” He shrugged.

“I see, and we still don’t know who they are?”

“No sir, they won’t answer questions, and they’re not doing anything against the law. The guards can’t really do anything.”

Francesco leaned forward on the table and steepled his hands. As his gaze focused on the far side of the room.

“I don’t like it. We don’t meet in council until the week’s end…” The thought of bringing the council together before that, without real cause, bothered him. “Have you heard back from Clainin?”

“No sir, he broke off contact when he began following them.”

“I see. For now, I want an agent placed in Haven. Have him monitor the situation and take as many names as possible. I want connections.”

“Yes sir.”

“That’s all we can do for now. Carry on.”

Avery saluted and walked away from the table. Francesco stared down at the remains of his meal, then looked up and waved for the cook to clear off the table.

Headline Stolen by M!
Submitted Thursday, April 26, 2007 - 11:57:28 PM by Martyna Z'muir

Martyna Z'muir

Seven weeks ago, a brazen thief stealthed into a tavern full of relaxing treasure hunters intent on stealing from the proprietor. A loud crash tipped off the crowd that something untoward had occurred. Kazola, owner of the famed Kazola’s Treetop Keg & Winery in Yew, turned to find the podium that displayed a ship model, given to Lady Silverbrook by the Dread Curly after Magincia’s waters were cleared, broken on the floor and the model missing.

Stuck by the audacity of the thief, the crowd slowly searched the tavern for the culprit. Unfortunately, all they discovered was a note stuck to the bulletin board reading: "Such nice friends you have, giving you mementos... Displayed so openly. Such an easy mark! -M."

The Yew Militia was informed of the theft, but no suspicious persons or clues were found. Patrolls of the area were increased somewhat to deter any future criminal activity.

‘M’, as the thief styled them-self, has gone on to steal from Lady Silverbrook on two occasions. The first theft involved the taking of a unique tome of zoology entitled "Rare Animals Vol. II", which had been given to Silverbrook by a 'Plane Walker' for her distinguished contributions to Sosaria.

As with the tavern theft, a note was tacked to the bulletin board in Silverbrook's home. It read: "Such interesting books you used to have. I'll have to shop here again, I like the discount. -M."

The first theft was followed two weeks later by a second break-in at the Silverbrook Estate. This time M snuck away with a priceless set of ancient Tokuno-made swords called "Noboru's Fury". As before, a note was left at the scene: "Were I working for the Mistress she would be most pleased. Now, the artifact is mine. - M."

Lady Silverbrook feels the notes left at M's crimes are of a taunting nature, designed to challenge the victims for some reason. This analysis seems likely. One also has to wonder who is this 'Mistress' of which M writes? A previous employer, or some sort of family figure?

The Magincia Trade Association likens the thefts to an unsolved string of burglaries that occurred in Felucca, before the exodus to Trammel. Those thefts involved high priced items taken from the homes of prominent citizens. However, several years after the thefts, the stolen goods reappeared in the property lockup of the local constabulary. No arrests were made.

Within the same week as Silverbrook's second theft, the city of Newcastle was rocked by the theft of a floppy hat owned by Ren the Conjuror which was on display following his memorial service. This callous theft left the Undermarshal, Lady Oona, "shocked and very upset," a sentiment echoed by the citizens of Newcastle and the Royal Knights of Redemption. As in the thefts before, a note was left at the scene of the crime: "A memorial for the dead? How touching! I'm sure Ren's relics will fetch a tidy sum... -M."

It is at this point that the thefts were forcefully brought to to the attention of the High Council during one of the weekly meetings. However, little in the way of an investigation took place.

This attitude changed abruptly, however, when the tunic and bandana of the Dragon Knight EdGuArDo were stolen from the Novus Daracona Museum of Culture & History in Compassion Grove. As per the pattern, a note was left on the bulletin board of the nearby Jerred Ghyss Civic Center: "Ah, memories. Such displays of sentimentality are for the weak and insecure. Knight is in check. -M."

The Chancellor of the High Council, Ra'Dian Fl'Gith, orderd Justicar Illidan to persure any and all leads on M with all due haste. The collective egg on the Council's face shone brightly in the candlelight.

The next theft took several days to come to light as Dot Warner, the victim, was reluctant to report the incident. M purloined a journal written by Lord DaKaren while he and Dot had journeyed through the Void for several years. Dot believed the journal had only been misplaced, until her assistant Morgain discovered a note on the bulletin board of their workshop. "What an interesting book. Such a droll fable.. Succumbed to a cider induced hallucination did we? -M."

Ms. Warner denies any cider binges, and the veracity of the journal was confirmed by Lord DaKaren; supported by Kazola's remembrance of their abrupt return, and odd means of transport. Apparently they had crafted a small tower out of blackmoor bricks, and then used power crystals to channel the ether into moonstones and blackrock to guide them back to Britannia.

M surfaced next at the Limerick Contest held by Lady Silverbrook at the Magincia Library and Museum, however, nothing was stolen. A book was discovered at the end of the event containing a rather long limerick:

"There was a young girl from Magincia,
who'd like to steal things from ya,
she cleaned up her act,
then her mentor turned her back,
to her old ways she slipped, ha!

She fell in with a villain,
not duped, she was will'n,
'round the facets she went,
which aided her descent,
she made quite a kill'n!

Many a bauble she hid in her sleeves,
through society her theft weaves,
then she stopped doin the bidd'n,
her Mistress found where she'd hidden,
and bound her in crystalline leaves.

For years she did sleep,
not a soul for her did weep,
the darkness she tried to suppress,
in crystal cracked under duress,
In did the King of Thieves sweep.

On the run from the law,
and a villainous maw,
her psyche did break,
and an evil did take,
she became not but a cat's paw."

The full meaning of the limerick is unknown; although, it does seem to indicate that 'M' is female, and possibly from Magincia. The mention of the 'King of Thieves' may be a reference to convicted traitor Ricardo, as he has been called such by his peers. Again, we also see reference to a 'Mistress' of some sort, apparently with the power to imprison people in crystal. The mentor mentioned in the first stanza is, unfortunately, also an unknown.

The last time anyone heard from M was during the Twenty Questions at Kazola's tavern when Lady Silverbrook "felt something brush against her." When she was ready to give the grand prize away, a copy of "Quotes from the pen of Wyrd Beastmaster", it was missing! After searching her pack, and Kazola's ample storage, she feared it stolen. Her fear was made manifest by the note Kazola found on the tavern bulletin board: "Here's a question: When is prize NOT a prize? When I've stolen it! -M."

Both women were visibly distressed due to their repeated victimization by M. Lady Silverbrook apologized to the contestants and vowed to award the grand prize when it is located. The assembled crowd was saddened by the theft, but was undeterred from participating in future events.

Will M continue to prey on the generous and well-known of our land? Can we ever express sentiment or display our keepsakes in safety again? When will M's reign of terror end?

Fortunately, an officer of the Royal Britannian Kilted Police, one Lilah Tyr'ettln, is investigating M's thefts. If you have any information regarding M please seek Lilah and I out for an interview.

Stay safe my fellow Britannians, and lock up your valuables!

I would like to invite you to the Grand Opening celebration for the Library of Sosaria!

The Library of Sosaria is a large sandstone building located at 72o 25'N 39o 22'W; south of the Yew moongate, and immediately east of the Nameless Rune Library. The library is on the first floor, with my office on the floor above. I have gathered tomes from the collections of Lord DaKaren, Lady Silverbrook, Kazola, and Redlow DeSule.

The intent behind the Library of Sosaria is to bring all the disparate collections into one place and be the definitive location to find great works of literature. Please feel free to donate any works that the Library does not yet have, we always welcome community submissions!

Kazola, of Kazola's Treetop Keg & Winery, has graciously agreed to move her usual tavern festivities to the Library so all may enjoy libations while they peruse the shelves. Please do not spill!

Hope to see you there!

Royal Knights Return to Royal Service
Submitted Monday, April 23, 2007 - 10:51:08 PM by Nick Seafort

Nick SeafortThe High Council chambers erupted in applause earlier today during an unexpected voting session. The occasion? The re-admittance of the Royal Knights of Redemption into the Britannian Armed Forces.

Some years ago, the Royal Knights under Templar Ren the Conjuror removed themselves from the armed forces during a conflict of opinion. Ever since, the Royal Knights have remained somewhat of a mercenary group, working with the United Council of Sosaria.

During the High Council gathering this eve, Undermarshall Oona of the knights made an empassioned plea to restore the status of the knights into the Britannian Armed Forces. The proposal was accepted by Princess Piper, the Councilor for Yew.

The aye vote caused applause and cheers all around.

Later in the meeting, Chancellor Ra'Dian Fl'Gith and Justicar Woodrow Call confirmed that the Grand Marshall revolution process would occur at midnight on New Years day in the year 416. By happenstance, this means the rotation will occur on the midnight after the next session of the High Council.

Treetop Trivia Time!
Submitted Tuesday, April 17, 2007 - 9:43:13 PM by Nick Seafort

Nick Seafortfrom Silverbook:

This Sunday Kazola's Treetop Keg and Winery was host to Lady Silverbrook and a furious game of Twenty Questions. Quite a few participants turned out to try their hand at getting checks for their bank account. Greeting them was Holden, Kazola's trusty bartender, as well as Kazola herself. Orders were taken and drinks were served just in time for the games to begin.

Some of the attendees included Carly, Sammy Acatour, Dot Warner, Alasra, Paige Baene, Fluud, Elwe al'Thor and Cadence. Big winners included Ra'Dian Fl'Gith, Aridas of FCB, and Mello Yellow, who a few times went as far as recalling out for answers when the crowd was stumped. The first twenty questions brought the first person to answer 50,000 gold each, and after a short break the final five 'bonus questions' were worth 100,000 coin each. Nine years of history into twenty five questions was quite a bit, but everyone did their best and seemed to have a good time at it.

Kazola's is open most Sundays at 8pm cst and offers a wide variety of different events for its patrons. Stay tuned for the next announcement, and new faces are always welcome to join in the fun!

Ghyss Estate Tragedy & Aftermath
Submitted Sunday, April 15, 2007 - 11:32:38 PM by Martyna Z'muir

Martyna Z'muir

Three months ago a deafening boom echoed across the sleepy town of Whispering Winds, shaking loose snow from the trees and scaring away the local wildlife. A pillar of black smoke rose above the ancient Ghyss Estate, home of Dr. Jerred Ghyss and his nephew Redlow Winski, as many fires fed on the now decimated dwelling.

Lady Silverbrook was the first on the scene, having journeyed to commune with the nearby Mother Tree. She discovered a dark-haired man dressed in a black robe standing at the edge of the destruction. According to Silverbrook, the man asked how she “liked his handiwork”, and when asked about Lord. Winski's whereabouts he stated how “lazy his brother was” and that he was “probably lying around here somewhere.”

Silverbrook found Redlow behind a ruined wall, spilling his life-blood onto the charred floor. He looked like he had been beaten severely, and she states that the 'fingers of both hands had been severed clean off, and that his cut out tongue lay beside him.' As she wove her healing magics to no avail, Lord Winski passed beyond the veil in her arms. Dr. Ghyss lay deeper into the ruin, having already succumbed to mortal injuries.

Where once a statue of Redlow Winski stood, now a statue of the dark robed man holding a cleaver loomed amid the ruin.

The man in black seen by Lady Silverbrook, was none other then Relk, Redlow Winski's half-brother. Relk is a self-proclaimed waiter and gourmet chef of dubious reputation. The relationship between Redlow and Relk has been strained for many years, with Relk threatening his brother's life on multiple occasions.

The explosion was initially investigated by Justicar Ra'Dian Fl'Gith of the High Council. He investigated the scene with Goldberry, widow of Redlow Winski, and the prime suspect Relk. Relk proclaimed his innocence, explaining away the disaster and death as a result of Dr. Ghyss conducting reckless experiments with blackrock. Erring on the side of caution, Justicar Fl'Gith chose to have Relk arrested for the crime while the investigation continued.

A day later, the citizenry of Britannia elected Ra'Dian as their new Chancellor, and the case was turned over to the Justicar Pro tem, Illidan. With the prime suspect in jail, the new Justicar began to investigate the case in earnest so Justice could take its due course.

It was soon discovered that one Frederick Corvair has posted a message regarding the procurement of a fuse on the bulletin board in the Nameless Rune Library. A warrant for Frederick's arrest was issued and he was soon incarcerated. It was also learned that Relk had purchased a keg of greater explosion potion at a shop in Tokuno after being directed there by a monk in Che'el d'Orbb.

An overlooked piece of evidence found by Lady Goldberry, whom apparently no one had thought to interview, was a letter from the Britain Bank to Dr. Ghyss. There had apparently been an unauthorized withdrawal of 6,000 gold from the Ghyss family account by Relk. This withdrawal was several days before the explosion and may have been for the purchase of a keg of greater explosion potion.

The investigation quickly turned towards the blast pattern of the explosion and its cause. Illidan determined that the epicenter of the blast had been located in the wine cellar, and that there were telltale signs of blackrock in the debris.

Two journals were found by Illidan in the rubble, penned by the late Dr. Ghyss. The first was an older journal concerning Relk's 'return to life', Dr. Ghyss's fascination with the necromantic arts, and musings on how life on our world may have been helped to regain a foothold after the legendary Zog destroyed it by casting Armageddon.

The second journal held far more tantalizing insight into Dr. Ghyss's potential for obsessive experimentation with dangerous substances. Namely, blackrock. Dr. Ghyss had recently been given a large chunk of the stone to study, but had chosen to hide it in the estate's wine cellar until the time was right...

Many weeks passed as Relk rotted in jail. He chose to pass the time by poking fun at his jailers, and the Grand Marshal Polynikes. Relk even went so far as to write his captors valentines and a recipe on how to cook Polynikes. Eventually Relk was questioned by the Grand Marshal about his involvement with the explosion. Relk stated that Frederick Corvair was innocent of the charges against him, which incidentally were a ruse conceived of by the High Council to provide Relk with a potential confidant and confessor who would then turn states evidence; and that he had intended to blow up the Ghyss Estate, however, Dr. Ghyss had conveniently beaten him to it...

At this point the Justicar believed Relk innocent, but was holding him over for trial to ensure the public's faith in the legal system. However, strangers to our land were about to throw an ethical monkey wrench into the works.

Syndar Tenebrae and Sinthia DeSule were those strangers, outworlders from the unknown facet of Verrerie. This facet was apparently created by the original Relk many years ago during a ritual to clone the Lady Kazola. This ritual had the 'side effect' of creating an entire facet based around this new Kazola. On this facet, once she had been drawn there, Kazola discovered a secret and was driven mad. She became the feared 'Green Witch' and wrought destruction upon her lands, eventually causing this Syndar to escape to our facet for help. The only way to save his facet was to get Relk to undo the original spell, and for that Relk had to be freed.

I know how fanciful this sounds dear reader, and how you might think this all an elaborate ruse on Relk's part to craft himself a plausible defense or escape incarceration; however, I was present at several events that proved the sincerity of Syndar's story.

Syndar talked the High Council into granting him an audience with Relk in the Yew Militia's jail. I accompanied Syndar along with Lady Kazola, Lord DaKaren, and Carde to witness the conversation. After many traded insults and prevarication by Relk, a Faustian deal was struck to release Relk into Syndar's custody. This deal required that all charges against Relk be dropped, he be freed from his cell, and that a tavern be provided to him on his home facet of Verrerie. Justicar Illidan, believing Relk innocent of the charges against him agreed to the release.

Two days later, outside the imposing Temple of Mondain in Felucca, the counter ritual to dispel the 'Green Witch' clone of Kazola that had been crafted by Lord DaKaren and Lady Silverbrook was cast. Relk, Syndar, and Sinthia all vanished once the spell was cast, presumably drawn back to their home facet.

This would appear to be the end of the case against Relk. Unfortunately, appearances can be deceiving. Two days after the ritual was cast, I received a package from an anonymous source who was apparently quite paranoid about winding up as an ingredient in one of Relk's dishes. Within the wrapping lay a journal, one written by Relk while he was in jail. The last entry held a disturbing, yet somewhat obvious, truth: Relk had lied.  The unedited entry reads thus:

"Day 58 I can dispense with the innocent front. Today, my old friend Syndar suddenly appeared before my cell door! Imagine my surprise to see that he finally managed to track me down. As it turns out, he wasn't there for me after all. He came to me with a wild story about the Green Witch destroying our home facet. I can't say I'm surprised, after what the other Relk told me. Well! He asked for my help, of all things too. He wants me to undo the clone spell the other Relk cast on Kazola all those years ago. Of course I agreed. Under the condition that I would be released, all charges would be dropped, and I would be given my own tavern. After a long discussion between Polypikes, the Justicar, and Syndar, the good Justicar agreed to free me. As so I was. I write this in the Yew Inn stretched out on a wonderfully comfortable -real- bed. And now, I take great pride in writing that, I, Relk the Waiter, did indeed blow up the damned Ghyss estate. Oh, I walked right in that night, as they'd granted me permission to stay there again. So, yes, I walked right on in and dropped off an explosive keg in the wine cellar. Qua Qualoine.. or some such.. a man in the Spider City I met had directed me to the keg at the friendly shop in Tokuno, the owner of which didn't ask any questions. The fuse I'd obtained from Frederick Corvair upon a little coersion. As for those who thought Dr. Ghyss blew himself up in a freak accident. No. Laughable. Yes, there was a piece of blackrock in the wine cellar, but that only made the explosion all the larger. Later the evening, after the deed was done, I ran into Silverbrook, who of course realized what I'd done. Too bad for them no one seemed to ask her about it. I'd likely be dead by now if they had. Ah well! You live, you learn. To any reading this? Good riddance to Redlowwinski."

This journal entry has been verified as being written by the hand of Relk the Waiter by comparing it with his previous journal and the Intro to Evil Cooking book he wrote some years ago. The Justicar was visibly shaken when I showed him the journal, and he seemed quite unnerved at having been manipulated by Relk.

These events left a scar on our community. Was Justice served? Could it be? Relk's release was intended to save an entire facet; was the loss of two lives on ours an acceptable trade off?

Fortunately, these questions may be moot. A side effect of the spell to save Verrerie caused a change to our facet: Redlow and the Doctor were restored somehow. However, their perception of event differs greatly from ours. To them they never died, their house didn't explode, and their last name has always been DeSule. Only time will tell what other differences may emerge.

On a curious note, however, the menacing statue of Relk from the Ghyss Estate has reappeared in the House DeSule...

Those that wish to read Relk's journals for themselves may find them in my office on the 2nd floor of the L-shaped house at 66o 21'S 24o 36'W in Whispering Winds.

Justicar Elections and Proxy Ballots
Submitted Wednesday, April 11, 2007 - 3:28:30 PM by Nick Seafort

Nick SeafortFrom Lionel Alazraham:

Hail, fellow Britannians!

With the recent stir in the elections for the position of High Justicar, I thought I would take a moment to issue this refresher on how the ballots work, and how Proxy Ballots work.

The two contenders for this political matchup are Illidan and Woodrow Call.

Citizens of Britannia are eligable to vote. In order to qualify as a citizen, you must be registered in the Tomes of Sosaria and have declared your citizenship to any of the various Britannian cities.

Ballots are collected at the election meeting and compared against the Tomes of Sosaria for validation. Then the votes are tabulated and the results published.

To make your ballot, use a book and inscribe within:

- Your Name
- The city you have declared to (in the Tomes)
- The name of the Candidate you wish to vote for.

The book author should be your name as well. The book title can be anything, but prefereably something relevant.

When you are done creating your ballot, the book must be sealed.

If you are able to attend the election, bring your ballot to the Election meeting.

If you need to vote by proxy, create your ballot as described above, then you have several choices:

- You can drop it in the proxy ballot box on the third floor of the High Council chambers.
- You can use the new Postal System to deliver your ballot.
- You can drop your ballot at the Kilted Police station on Trinsic's Barrier Isle.
- You can give them to me, Lionel Alazraham.
- You can give them to a friend who wlll attend the election meeting.

Thank you for participating in the election. Truly, this is the kind of thing my grandfather would have been proud of.

Lionel Alazraham
Public Affairs Clerk to the High Council of Britannia

Please note that only one vote per player will be counted. The vote is not counted per character.

The Truth Shall Set Us Free!
Submitted Monday, April 9, 2007 - 7:24:59 PM by Nick Seafort

Nick Seafortfrom BNN:

Words fail to describe the abundant joy permeating the Lycaeum today; for mages, scholars and scribes at long last have found the lost Book of Truth. Having searched diligently through thousands upon thousands of tomes recovered by noble adventurers, it was announced earlier this morning that one of the many had tested true!

The Lycaeum, and surely Britannia herself, thank all those who braved the depths of dungeons and places most foul to bring the light of Truth back to the people. To honor the one who recovered the true tome, a special plaque has been dedicated to the hero at the shrine within the Lycaeum.

You can find this place by using the teleporter near the bookcases in the Lycaeum, which will take you into the library’s basement.

The heroes being honored for each shard are as follows:

Chesapeake: Uxmal
Atlantic: Lady Andrasta
Catskills: Lord Vallend
Siege Perilous: Yasuo Wakayama
Legends: Aleah
Great Lakes: Ayla
Lake Superior: Esmeralda
Lake Austin: Jasmine

Election Procedures for Upcoming Justicar Elections
Submitted Monday, April 9, 2007 - 6:02:43 PM by Nick Seafort

Nick Seafortfrom RaDian Fl'Gith:

Votes will be taken one vote per citizen, sealed in a book, with your name, your declared citizenship (IE: citizen of Britannia), and the candidate that you wish to cast your vote for.

Citizenship will be compared against the Sosarian Denizen Registry (only one vote per person will be allowed, not per character). To register yourself in the Sosarian Denizen Registry, you should create an account here at the Tomes of Sosaria, and then choose Add New Denizen once you are logged in.

The vote will be tallied and the winner will be announced during the Council meeting that follows the election.

The Undiscovered Facet - Epilogue
Submitted Wednesday, April 4, 2007 - 1:51:38 PM by Nick Seafort

Nick SeafortFrom Redlow DeSule:

The final chapter of the Undiscovered Facet has been posted. This concludes the storyline. You can find the full story by following this link.

Thanks for all the fun, everyone! I'll be providing the Herald with a timeline sometime as soon as I can get all the exact dates together, myself.

Most of the unresolved questions are answered in the epilogue, especially those that might arise from missing sections of the in-game quest.

As for the name change to DeSule, no, the character in-game is the exact same character as before. There was no inter-dimensional translocation going on. Sometimes it's the finer details that make all the difference.
