The Top Ten of Great Lakes Roleplay History
We're drawing close now on another year of Great Lakes Roleplay. This year's been tough, but we've seen it through. With the coming of the new year, we've put together what we think are the top 10 most memorable moments or things in Great Lakes History. This feature is sponsored by the Hansonian Institute for Historical Study.
10. The Turn of the Century
It dosen't seem like such a big deal now, but back in the 20th century.. everyone was wondering: would the Y2K bug affect UO? What would the new century be like? Where are my flying cars? I was promised flying cars! At any rate, UO players decided en masse to celebrate the new century in game. To this day, most everyone remembers where they were and what they were doing at 12:00:01 on January 1, 2000. I personally was with a party of folks fishing up a treaure chest.
9. Teleburiel gets the coolest Seer House.. ever!
Most times, when a Seer would have a new, permanent In-Character persona, they would also get a new habitat for that character.. somewhere the players could come to get in contact with them. For Rhysart, it was a cave. For Gunther the Squire, it was a little blacksmith shop near Castle Britannia. Jacinda the Druid had a patio forge which was half-submerged and had a flower garden.. but Teleburiel had without a doubt the coolest seer house ever: A monastery!
But this was no ordinary monastery in a forest somewhere.. no, sir. This monastery was on the top of the serpents spine mountains, and carved out of solid rock, and not only that, but the only way to or from the monastery was to use the platform elevator! The Monastery first appeared in it's destroyed state, but it was intended to be repaired eventually. Unfortunately, that never happened. Nevertheless, it remains the coolest Seer House.. ever!
8. Red William's Gold Dragon Tavern
In the days after the waning of Kazola's, but before the advent of Trammel, the hotspot for player-seer interaction was Red William's Gold Dragon Tavern. Actually, I can't actually remember if that was the official name, but I can remember all the fun to be had there. Storytelling, Roleplay Gossip, a grizzled sailor, and frequent Seer-spawned lizardmen invasions! It was all in good fun, but would eventualy lead to some controversy for Red William, and ultimately his reclusiveness from the community.
7. The Three Cities
Throughout the history of the shard, just about every city in Britannia has been home to some form of government or another.. but only three really stood the test of time: Skara Brae, Yew, and Trinsic:
Much of the information about the Skara Brae Council is sketchy. They existed around the same time as the Yew Town Council, and were frequently overshadowed. Furthermore, their web page was on Xoom, which no longer exists. the Skara Town Council did a lot of roleplay activities, and had a positive influence on the city.. and they were rewarded with a "blessed" town hall. Their guildstone was a marroonish red, and was placed in the Town Hall.
No city government has ever been involved with seer quests so much as the Town Council of Yew. Yew has spawned such prolific names as: Maximillian of Yew, Mythra, and Blitz Phoenix (among others). Along with Kazola's, they were a hot spot for their day, with several key events of the Hebban Olla saga, and the saga and the Mordread the Lich series taking place there. The Yew Town Council exists to this day, but hangs precariously by a thread.
They say that Trinsic is the City of Honor.. but it's proven itself to be more the city of scandal. Trinsic perhaps has Great Lakes longest-running council.. for better or worse, the Town Council has been going on in some form or another for 5 years now. Trinsic's golden era was headed up by Theo of Trinsic. At one point during his term, the Council encompassed over 60 people, and 5 guildstones. The Council even went so far as to have both a Militia and a Paladins guild.. and they had a commerce guild, and a religious guild as well. It was impressive to say the least. The Trinsic Town Council also hangs precariously with no members.. but as of this writing, there is an election in progress for the new mayor.
6. The Dragon Knights
During the Gold One quests, both the Black Dragon, and the Gold Dragon held PvP tournaments to determine who would be their "Dragon Knights". They were given a special sash which proclaimed their title. The Dragon Knights not only clashed in everyday battles, but had the opportunity to participate in special battles as well. Unfortunately, many of the recipients of these special sashes took the responsibility as a joke. Most of the sashes were auctioned off on E-bay or other services, and to this day the only original Dragon Knight I know of is Edguardo.
5. Marcus' Quest for Britannia
Most everyone still remembers this project, which took place this year in fact. During the first quarter of this year, a man named Marcus returned to the scene.. though most had never heard of him before. He created an organization which promised reform to the roleplaying community, and offered the hope of roleplay with no complaint. The idea reasonated with most roleplayers, and for some time the QfB soared in popularity. Later, Marcus revealed the QfB to be vehicle for his own ascension to the thone, and after he took a great deal of criticism for this, he supposedly left the game, taking QfB with him.
The members of QfB had to do a double take.. it had gone from its peak, to being nonexistant in less than a week. Several of the more community-oriented members picked up the pieces, and tried to put QfB back together again. The QfB you see today is a completely reformed group with new ideals, and great ambitions.
4. Kazola's Treetop Keg and Winery
Old timers remember Kazola's with fondness, and newcomers have heard the legends of the "little tavern that could". Kasola's recieved a great deal of recognition as UO's first blessed establishment, but it was much more than a cool looking house. Kazolas was a hotbed for roleplaying; Seers, players, and PK's alike frequented the establishment.. sometimes with disastrous results. It exists in it's original form, and you can still visit it today.. though its not quite the hotspot it once was.
3. Cult of the Black Dragon
A guild spawned by the Black One hisself, the Cult of the Black Dragon worshipped Chaos, and were perhaps the first evil roleplay guild to establish a truly "evil" persona without having everyone else shun them. At one point, the Cult even helped to found an evil city.. the town of Caelum Mortuus. They were a key player in later evil developments, like the Empire of Armageddon. After their leader, Basil Stag Hare died, the guild slowly began to lose steam, and today no longer exists.. though its probably the only guild to be ended by design, as opposed to being ended naturally.
2. The Saga of Rhysart the Hermit
Rhysart was a Seer played character who was at the heart of two of the most in-depth plots on GL. He was a tortured soul, but a benevolent fellow, and had so many facets to his character as to seem like a real person. His alter-ego. Seer Degodefroi provided Great Lakes with high-quality long-term plots. In his time, he only ran 2 plots, but each lasted well over a year. The two, now legendary plotlines were: Rhysart the Hermit and the saga of Mordread the Liche, and The coming of Hebban Olla. The latter is more widely remembered, simply because there are more players from that era who still play.
1. Bloodrock Orc Clan
Let's check off the list here: One of the longest lasting roleplay guild has always had a spectacular reputation with other roleplayers, and encompasses 60+ players on Great Lakes alone, yet has the most wars of any guild on any shard. What is it about orcs that makes them so popular? I suppose you'd have to ask them.. but theres simply no doubting it, no guild is more respected than the Bloodrocks.. and no guild has maintained that reputation for longer.
We're no definitive source on roleplay, but we hope we've reminded you of some of the fun things that happened in the past. If you have a top ten moment you'd like to share, slap it over on our Message Boards.
