Sandlewood Hires New Bartender
Submitted Friday, February 22, 2002 - 9:40:05 AM by Noleeens

NoleeensThe Sandlewood is proud to announce Anduin as the newest addition to the Sandlewood staff. Anduin worked for Ryak long, long ago and recently returned from a long stint at sea. He’ll will be serving up ale, telling tall tales of the sea, jokes and maybe, if yer not so lucky, singing a song or two each Sunday evening at the Sandlewood.

To celebrate his return Noleeens gave him some gold and other goodies to give away this Sunday. How will he do it? That’s a surprise. So stop by this Sunday evening and see if you can wrangle some goodies out of Anduin’s backpack.

The Sandlewood will be serving drinks and food and some surprises up at 7pm under the eastern skies, this Sunday evening. We look forward to seeing you there!

The Sandlewood Box Inn is located on the Felucca facet, north of Trinsic near the ruins. To arrange to visit, directions can easily be given, or we’d be happy to meet ye and give ye a rune of yer own. Just drop a pigeon to the owner, Noleeens (26424082). The Sandlewood's vendors stock GM made: armor, weapons, recalls, tribal paint, arcane items, stoneware, potions, and reagents along with many other items the casual traveller or warrior may find useful.(and at very reasonable prices!!)

Thursday Development Update - 21 Feb 2002
Submitted Thursday, February 21, 2002 - 3:12:19 AM by Nick Seafort

Nick SeafortHowdy pardners! Its tim fe the Thursday Develo.. deve.. Doohickey roundup, YEEHAW! Grab yerself a can o beans from the cookie, and take a load off by yon campfire, I'monna tell you what!

Whheee dogggies if Adrick didn't get hisself in a preedikament this week.. y'see, he posted up his ideas for the murderin system which are technically in concept, but he released em early, an faster than greased pig, everyone told Adrick to go back east with the cityfolk:

Note: The murder of an innocent is defined as a situation where a player deals unlawful damage, thereby directly resulting in the death of a blue player (note: damaging a guild war opponent, faction opponent, a criminal, a murderer, guildmate, etc, are considered lawful damage).

  1. When an innocent player is murdered, 70% of the innocent’s items (a random result per item) will remain on their ghost (unlootable).
  2. When an innocent player is murdered, that player will be given the option to teleport to a town through a free “stuck player” window.
  3. All dead players (ghosts) without the spirit speak skill will no longer be able to hear what live players are saying (they will hear something to the effect of “blah, blah, blah” instead of the actual words).

Changes to the consequences/conditions of the “Murderer” status
In order to provide a means to eliminate the “stat loss” system for punishing murderers, while providing a new, yet suitable level of consequence for the “murder” of characters in the Felucca lands, the following measures will be taken:

  1. All characters will receive a “one-time” reprieve for all murders of every type (all murder counts will be reset).
  2. All tracking of “short-term” and “ping-pong” murder counts will be eliminated (they will be obsolete upon the implementation of the changes below).
  3. The “stat loss” system will be eliminated completely (red characters will no longer take stat loss upon ressurection).
  4. All newly acquired murder counts will decay with 120-hour (5 days) real-time timers (online or offline).
  5. Due to the imprecise nature of Justice in Felucca, murder counts will now be tracked on a shard level for each account. After 5 murders on that shard all characters on that shard for that account will become red (all other characters on that shard for that account are considered accessories to murder).
  6. Reds (murderers) will no longer be able to ban other players from houses.
  7. Houses will have a “no red entry” option that will prevent all reds from entering the house (essentially, they will be “auto-banned” from that house).
  8. Due to the remaining force of Justice in Felucca, reds will no longer be able to cast the recall spell.
  9. The “bounty system” will be eliminated.
  10. The “murderer” paperdoll title will be eliminated (although players with 5 murders will still highlight red and be considered “murderers” in this document).

No doubt 'bout it, lotsa people don't like the fellers newfangled notions of how the world should work. Nosiree, not one bit. An theyre bein real loud about it too. Downhome countryfolk like yourself though reconizze the potential benefits of such a system. Later on Adrick came along and 'splained the sichiashion:
Its one challenging job to design on a game with so many players with so many different playstyles.
The team has been reading the boards and 95% of people posting despise the one red all red - thats way more than we expected.

Ok before everyone thinks I and the rest of the team are on crack and out to ruin everyones game let me attempt to explain our reason for proposing that.

First off it was something we had heard players ask for on several occasions. We discussed it and we had concerns - many of which we heard today on the boards.

We want to remove stat loss from the game. We want more neutral players from trammel to play in Felucca. We want to keep non consensual pvp - meaning we want reds and blues to duke it out in felucca. We want to reward those who play in felucca and assume more risk.

Removing stat loss - increases risk in trammel for blues, greatly increases reds to the point where a vast majority of players would be red - decreases fel population overall since not many blues would want to be there with so many reds and so high a chance of dying and losing items.

One Red all red - keeps the number of reds relatively the same - keeps level of risk in fel relatively the same.

So just throwing something out - Id like to see posts from those who said that one red all red was horrible and they would quit. One red one red but no looting for reds that kill blues other than gold coin and gems. Reds lose 30% items on death (meaning 30% of items go to corpse along with all gold and gems). No recall for anyone in Fel, A timer on gate travel after resurrection - say 20 min.

Now also keep in mind we have as yet not discussed the rewards that will ONLY be available in felucca and they are not token items.

Also keep in mind this is stuff we are discussing as possibilities - but we are listening to feedback.

Blue players - would you go to felucca under those circumstances if there were items you could only get there?

Red players - is not looting victims better than all characters on your account being red?

*Hides*

I dunno what he was tryin to say, we figgered they was on crack long before this.

Plant Growing
Using special seeds harvested from slain monsters, you may grow uniquely colored plants to use as house decorations or to produce hybrid seeds and resources.

As your plant grows from a seed to a full-grown plant, it will need watering and alchemical care in order to protect if from insect infestations and harmful fungi.

Through the process of cross-pollination, you may even be the first person to grow a unique new hybrid plant type!

Plant Bowl
In order to plant a seed, you first need a special bowl. Plant bowls can be purchased from a provisioner for a small price.

Once you have an empty plant bowl, you’ll need to fill it with dirt before you can plant a seed in it.

To fill a plant bowl with dirt, double-click the bowl to use it, and then target a source of nice soft brown dirt. If you’ve targeted an appropriate patch of dirt, you’ll now have a bowl full of dirt. Add in enough water to soften the dirt, and you’ll have a perfect spot for planting a seed!

Plant Seeds
Plant seeds come in many different colors. When planted in a bowl of dirt and carefully tended to over time, plant seeds will grow into full-grown plants. These plants can be used for decorative purposes only, or as a source of new hybrid plant seeds and specially grown resources.

While you can tell what color of plant the seed will grow into by the color of the seed itself, the type of plant that results from a particular seed remains a mystery until the plant is fully-grown!

The first step in growing a seed into a plant is planting it in a bowl of soft dirt. In order to plant a seed, simply double-click the seed to use it, and then target a bowl of soft dirt. Freshly dug dirt isn’t soft enough for a seed to be planted in, so you’ll need to pour water into your bowl of dirt before attempting to place a seed in it.

Plant Growth
Plants take time to grow through their various stages. A plant has nine main stages of growth, from seed, to sapling, to fully grown plant. Plants will not grow in containers, unless the container is in a player’s backpack. If a plant is healthy and well-tended, it will grow one “stage” of its life-cycle in about a day’s time. If a plant is not healthy because it has not been well taken care of, then it will not grow. You must keep your plant in a healthy state by curing it of any maladies that might be affecting it, and then letting it heal naturally or help it along through alchemical means.

Plant Health
Plants have hit points much like your character. A plant loses hit points when it is affected by various maladies. If a plant has insects eating at it, then it will lose hit points each day. Other maladies that can affect a plant’s health include under or over-watering the plant, harmful fungi, poison, and disease.

Heal potions and a plant’s natural healing will raise the plant’s hit points back up to its maximum, but only if the plant has been cured of all maladies first.

If a plant loses all its hit points, it will die.

As a plant grows, its maximum health increases. Seeds and saplings are very weak, and can easily be killed if neglected for even a short while. Full-grown plants, on the other hand, could survive for several days without any help.

Infestation
As a plant grows, it has a chance of being infested by insects. These insects will slowly eat at a plant, causing it to lose health and eventually die. Different plants have different chances of being infested. Flowery plants, over-watered plants, and bright plants all have a greater chance of attracting hungry insects, so they’ll need even more attention from their owner.

You can use poison potions on your plant in order to kill off the insects that have infested it. Be sure that you do not use too much poison, however, or your plant will soak up the poison, which can cause it to wither and die!

You can view your plant’s current Infestation Level in the Plant Health menu.

Infestation Level
The Infestation Level meter (grey bug image) shows the relative amount of insects that are currently attacking your plant.

A yellow + sign means the plant has a small infestation. A red + sign indicates a severe infestation.

Fungus
As a plant grows, it has a chance of being infected with harmful fungi. Fungi sap the plant of its health, which will cause it to wither and die. It is important to remember that fungi love moist areas, so over-watering your plant increases the chance that it will become infected by harmful fungi.

You may cure your plant of fungus by using cure potions.

You can view your plant’s current Fungus Level in the Plant Health menu.

Fungus Level
The Fungus Level meter (mushroom image) shows the amount of fungi that are currently sapping health from your plant

A yellow + sign means the plant has a small fungus infection. A red + sign indicates a severe fungus infection.

Poison (Plants)
You may apply poison potions to your plant to kill insects infesting it. If you apply too many poison potions, however, or apply poison potions when there are no insects on the plant, then your plant will soak up the poison and become sick.

When you apply poison potions, they will not take effect until the next growth check your plant performs (approximately once a day). Don’t worry, however, as insects only harm your plant during a growth check as well, so any insects will be killed off by your poison potions before they can harm your plant.

If you accidentally poison your plant, you can cure the plant of poison by using heal potions to counteract the poison.

You can view your plant’s current Poison Level in the Plant Health menu.

Poison Level
The Poison Level meter (skull image) shows the amount of poison that your plant has soaked up.

A yellow + sign means the plant is slightly poisoned. A red + sign indicates that the plant is severely poisoned.

Curing (Plants)
You may apply cure potions to a plant in order to cure it of harmful fungi. If you apply too many cure potions, however, or apply cure potions when the plant is not infected by fungi, you will infect your plant with a deadly disease which will cause it to wither and die.

When you apply cure potions, they will not take effect until the next growth check your plant performs (approximately once a day). Don’t worry, however, as fungi only harm your plant during a growth check as well, so any harmful fungi will be cured by your cure potions before they can harm your plant.

If you accidentally infect your plant with a disease by over-curing it, you can use heal potions to counteract the disease.

You may view your plant’s current Disease Level in the Plant Health menu.

Disease Level
The Disease Level meter (purple goo image) shows the strength of the disease affecting your plant.

A yellow + sign means the plant is slightly infected. A red + sign indicates that the plant is severely infected.

Watering
In order to keep your plant healthy, you must water it regularly. An under-watered plant will wither and die if left unattended. However, it is important to remember that over-watering your plant is also unhealthy. Over-watered plants become waterlogged and lose health, in addition to becoming perfect breeding grounds for insects and fungi.

Each time a plant performs its growth check (approximately once a day), the plant will soak up one dose of water, so you’ll need to keep a constant eye on your plant to make sure it has not dried out.

You can view your plant’s current Water Level in the Plant Health menu.

Water Level The Water Level meter (water pitcher image) shows the amount of water in your plant bowl.
Unlike other state meters, the Water Level meter displays both negative (under-watered) and positive (over-watered) levels

A yellow – sign indicates the plant is slightly under-watered. A red – sign indicates a severely under-watered.

A yellow + sign indicates the plant has been slightly over-watered. A red + sign indicates the plant has been severely over-watered.

Potions (Plants)
You may apply various potions to a plant in order to cure it of various maladies, help it to heal back up to maximum health, or strengthen it against infestations. Potions are applied through the Water button on the Main Menu.

The following potions may be used on plants:
Heal Potions
Cure Potions
Poison Potions
Strength Potions

Heal Potions (Plants)
You may apply heal potions to a plant in order to cure it of poison or disease. Heal potions are applied during a plant’s normal growth check, so you will need to apply new heal potions each day if you want the plant to continue applying their beneficial effects.

If heal potions are applied to a plant that is not poisoned or diseased, and the plant has no other maladies currently affecting it, then the heal potions will be used to help increase the plant’s current hit points (in addition to the natural healing a plant performs if it is not currently infected by any maladies).

Strength Potions (Plants)
You may apply strength potions to a plant in order to help it resist insect infestations and fungus growth. Each strength potion applied will lower the chance of infestation by harmful maladies. Strength potions are soaked up by a plant during its normal growth check, so you will need to apply new strength potions each day if you want the plant to continue applying their beneficial effects.

Cross-Pollination
When a plant first reaches its full-grown state, it will sprout its full foliage, no longer contained within the plant bowl. At this stage of the plant’s growth, it will begin to produce pollen. You can view your plant’s current Pollination State in the Plant Resources Menu. The plant will eventually self-pollinate if left unattended, and the plant will begin to produce seeds. Seeds produced by a self-pollinated plant will grow up into an exact duplicate of the ”parent” plant.

Another method of pollination is called ”cross-pollination”. Once a plant reaches the pollen-producing stage, its pollen may be gathered by the owner by using the Cross-Pollination button. Gathered pollen may be used on another full-grown plant. When you pollinate one plant with pollen from another plant, the targeted plant will produce seeds that will grow into a hybrid of the two plants. The color and type of each ”parent” plant are combined to produce a new type of seed that will grow from the targeted plant.

While you may continue to gather pollen from a plant throughout its entire life cycle, once a plant has been pollinated (either by itself, through natural pollination, or through manual cross-pollination from another plant), no further combinations may be performed. The seed type that the plant will produce is determined the first time the plant is pollinized, and cannot be changed afterwards.

In very rare circumstances, cross-pollination may result in a ”mutation”. If mutation occurs, the targeted plant will not produce seeds that are a combination of the two ”parent” plants, but will instead produce ”mutated” seeds that grow into mutant plant varieties.

Pollination State
The Pollination State indicator displays the current pollination state of a plant.

A yellow – symbol indicates that the plant has not yet produced any pollen, as it has not reached full-grown level.

A red ! symbol indicates that the plant has entered its pollen producing state, and can have pollen gathered from it, or be cross-pollinated to.

A green + symbol indicates that the plant has been pollinated (either by itself, through natural self-pollination, or by the pollen of another plant). While you can still gather pollen from a plant in this state, the plant can no longer be the target of cross-pollination.

Seed Production
When a plant reaches its maximum growth level, it will no longer grow in size, but will instead produce seeds any time a growth check is performed.

The type of seed that a plant produces is determined by whether it pollinated itself, or if pollen from another plant was applied to it during the cross-pollination process.

A plant will produce once seed per day, up to a maximum of eight seeds. A plant will only produce a seed if it is healthy.

You may gather seeds from a plant by using the Gather Seeds button on the Resources menu. You will pick all available seeds from the plant and place them in your backpack, if there is room.

The number of seeds available is displayed next to the Seed # indicator (seed image in an empty box).

A red X symbol indicates that the plant has been set to decorative mode, or has produced its maximum amount.

Resource Production
Certain plant type and color combinations result in a plant that can produce unique resources.

A plant will begin producing resources at the same time it produces seeds, when it reaches its maximum growth level.

One resource is produced per day, up to a maximum of eight resources. A plant will only produce resources if it is healthy.

You may gather resources from a plant by using the Gather Resources button on the Resources menu. You will pick all available resources from the plant and place them in your backpack, if there is room.

The number of resources available is displayed next to the Resource # indicator (petal image in an empty box).

A red X symbol indicates that the plant has been set to decorative mode, or has produced its maximum amount.

Resources produced by unique plant combinations have special properties dependant on the resource type and color.

Decorative Mode
When a plant reaches its maximum growth level, a Decorative Mode symbol will appear in the Resources Menu. This symbol is displayed as a leafy plant with a red / symbol through it.

Pressing this button (and clicking Yes to apply) will set the plant to Decorative Mode.

A plant set to Decorative Mode will not produce seeds or resources, and cannot be used for cross-pollination. A Decorative Plant does not need upkeep, however, and is always in a healthy state.

Decorative Mode should be activated if you simply want your plant to be used as a house decoration, and therefore do not want to have to water it or keep it healthy.

A Decorative Plant will have the tag [decorative] displayed above it when single-clicked.

IMPORTANT NOTE : Once a plant is set to Decorative Mode, it cannot be set back to its normal state. A Decorative Plant will never produce seeds or resources again.

Emptying the Bowl
If you would like to empty your plant bowl of the plant or seed and start over again, you may use the Empty Bowl button on the Main Menu.

If the plant in the bowl is in the seed or sapling stage, emptying the bowl will result in a bowl and the seed placed in your backpack.

If the bowl only had dirt in it, or the plant had grown beyond the sapling phase, emptying the bowl will destroy the plant, returning only the plant bowl to your backpack.

Summary of Skara Brae Meeting
Submitted Wednesday, February 20, 2002 - 9:07:51 PM by Jeremiah Cruz

Jeremiah CruzThe meeting came and the meeting went, but not without a little fireworks. It started with Jasmine appearing and Lord Rath Stonesoul, Lord of Skara Brae, calling the meeting to order. The building was under heavy guard. Knights from House Stonesoul and rangers from the Skara Brae Rangers guarded the doors and patrolled the streets around the town hall. No one would be allowed to harm Jasmine.

Question arose to where the ring was from, who created them, and what powers they had. Several people spoke, throwing wild guesses into the air, but only one made sense. The rings were forged by Mordain and were in the possesion of Sanctus Mondain Dominus. In love, Mordain gave the smaller portion of the ring to Xterra. Time passed and the two grew apart and seperated. Its believed that Xterra was the woman that Jasmine saw cast the ring into the creek. What powers do the rings hold? Some say the power to conquer the shard or to make a man invincible.

About this time a man burst into the meeting chamber. His skin was pale, his hair dark. On the right side of his face ran a scar, cutting right through his right eye which was clouded grey. Jasmine screamed and the man chuckled. "I am Zytral, give me the ring..." A room once quiet became filled with a thousand voices. Jasmine fainted and had to be caught to keep her from falling out of her chair.

Zytral berated the folks in the chamber when a booming voice roared over the crowd, "SILENCE!" All eyes turned to Lord Rath who calmly addressed Zytral, "You will not have the ring." Zytral, obviously shocked by the response, scoffed, "I will destroy this city if you don't." Rath, unimpressed, told his men to have Zytral removed from the chambers. Zytral tried to steady himself, but there were too many and they dragged him kicking and screaming out of the room.

With order restored, the meeting was finished up. Jasmine, woozy from the encounter, was escorted to the Inn by a caravan of guards. Rath called an end to the meeting and then addressed people wishing to help in private discussion.

Folks of Skara Brae and the surrounding areas. Your help is needed. Please keep an eye out for the man by the name of Zytral, a bounty of 25,000 gold pieces is offered for any information leading to the wherabouts of his hideout!

Rain Story Part II
Submitted Tuesday, February 19, 2002 - 10:01:10 AM by Jeremiah Cruz

Jeremiah CruzRain spent several nights on the open road, stopping only to rest. Finally, after a week of hard, non stop travel, Rain came to a place called Sandlewood, or so the sign on the post said. Rain was very tired after his travels. As he started to make camp, he caught some movement out of the corner of his eye. The hair on the back of Rain's neck stood up, and he felt an eerie feeling, as if he was being watched... by something..

Rain quickly scouted the area, only to find a small doe wondering around. He scratched his head, never had his senses been this wrong before. Rain quickly pulled his bow and loosed an arrow, killing the small doe with one arrow. He thought this would be a great meal, considering he had been traveling hard for the last week. He skinned the doe, cut the meat, and settled down by the fire for the night.

The next morning, Rain awoke to a dagger posed at his neck. There, hunched over him, was a rather pale, slender build man. From the way he grasped Rain, Rain knew the man was very strong, and Rain doubted that he could free himself from this man's strong grip. It was then that Rain knew that this man was not the only one there. Three other men, and one very beautiful lady on horseback, were also there.

The slender man spoke to rain, as he took a vile from his pack. "Do not resist little one" the man said, "for I do not want to kill you, I just need some of your blood." The man held Rain tight, as removed a dagger from his sheath and put a tiny slit in Rain's wrist, then he extracted the blood. "Nooooooooooooooooooo!" Rain screamed, but it was to late. The man let Rain go, and backed away slowly.

"I can not believe my sensed did not awake me" Rain muttered, thinking twice they had failed him.

"Senses!" the man yelled, "such a foolish boy, she just used a mere charm on you!" The man started laughing with his companions, as he pointed to the lady on the horse.

Rain felt around in his pack for a bandage, which he promptly applied to the small slit in his wrist. Rain also reached for his bow, unleashing an arrow as fast as he could. The arrow sailed through the air and seemed to just bounce off of the man. The man laughed at the young boy. "Foolish boy, do you really think you can harm me?" Rain was quite surprised. He then drew his kryss and jumped into action, leaping over a fallen log, he landed promptly on his feet next to the man, gave an upward slash that cut the man's left arm.

Rain smiled slightly, revealing his tiny fangs for the first time. The man started casting a spell, Rain knew he did not have much time, so he took a step forward and lunged with his Kryss, straight for the man's heart.

"Enough!" The woman on the horse yelled. Rain could not move, could not even hold his weapon with his hand, thus the kryss fell to the ground. Rain could not move. The horse that the lady had been on seamed to just disappeared from underneath the woman. She then seemed to float over towards the young boy. The lady gently moved the boy's hair from the side of his head, to reveal small puncture wounds on his neck.

"Boromir, give him the vile back, his blood is tainted. It is of no use to us."

"All the more reason to kill him then," Boromir advanced toward Rain with lightening speed, still holding where Rain's kryss had cut him, even thought the wound was no longer there. "I owe you one my little friend"

"Boromir, leave him be, there is something.." The lady paused to think for a minute, "different about this one." Boromir threw the vile of blood to Rains feet. "I will not forget this little one," the man said as he pointed to his arm. With that, he turned and left. The lady gently released the boy and turned as well. The group seems to disappear into the early morning dew.

Rain sat there a moment, regaining his senses, thinking about what has just transpired.

New Feature, Monday Music!
Submitted Monday, February 18, 2002 - 3:44:36 PM by Nick Seafort

Nick SeafortThe new Lord Blackthorn's Revenge client supports high-quality MP3 music, but if you have played Ultima 9 You've pretty much heard the entire LBR soundtrack. Thats why the Herald is firing up a new feature.. Monday Music. Each Monday when you visit the Herald, you'll find a fresh MP3 which is suited for your listening needs. Additionally, you'l get some recommendations for other music that you can download with your favorite file-sharing software.. such as Kazaa or Audiogalaxy. Or you could purchase it at your favorite online retailer.

This weeks picks by me, Nick Seafort:

1. "True Love's First Kiss" - Shrek Soundtrack
This is an instrumental piece which has a fantasy feel to it. If you've seen the movie, its from the section where Shrek and the Donkey go to break up the wedding while riding the dragons back. Its your basic, classic style adventure music.

2. "Rachel's Song" by Vangelis - Blade Runner soundtrack
This is a very unique and beautiful piece. Coming from Vangelis, you would expect it to be odd, and it is kind of eerie in a way, but it has a very clean feel to it. It featuress a single female vocal, but she speaks no words. Its a nice example of conveying emotion without using language.

3. "Overture" by Chance Thomas - Quest for Glory 5 soundtrack
Percussion, horns.. definite battle music. The music is from the last of Sierra's Quest for Glory series and it pretty much speaks for itself. Its only detriment is that it has such a range of styles, that it would be hard to pick which song it is going to replace. Still, its worth a listen.

Today's Nifty music download is:

"Stage 1" - Panzer Dragoon soundtrack
Panzer Dragoon was an old sega game for the Sega Saturn. As you can imagine, being on saturn it wasnt played much, and didnt last long.. but the music lives on. Its another instrumental piece with percussion, flutes, and lots and lots of strings. Being a Japanese game, its written in the modern Japanese classic style similar to that of Nubuo Uematsu (the composer for the Final Fantasy series).

I hope you enjoy my picks this week! In the future, we will bring in some guest suggestions. For those of you who are into other musical types.. Rock, Pop.. whatever I'll find someone who knows about all that for next week, so you dont have to be cooped up by my stodgy classical tastes.

So, until next Monday, TA!

Robin Hood of Trinsic -Event Results
Submitted Saturday, February 16, 2002 - 4:56:32 PM by Noleeens

NoleeensHoly Friar Tuck........

The Robin Hood Archery Contest in Trinsic was a huge sucess due to all those who showed up to compete and those who helped run the event.

Trinsic's thanks go out to TvG.. for the wonderful food and drink they brought and set up in the Mess Hall, TTM..for patrolling the area keeping us safe, Alaric of Crusaders of Valor.. for donating 100k as first place, Jenner of NRA..for holding the event, Neve and Mist Angel of SWP.. for being the *Butte girls*.

The winner and *Robin Hood of Trinsic* was Emrill of BDA. Second place went to Patience and third place to Muscovy. Zod of TvG was the winner in the Losers bracket. I sat too close to the butttes and had to pull several arrows out of my leg.

I personally want to thank all those who came and competed. 43 people signed up to shoot in the contest. Too bad we couldn't have more than one winner.

Thanks to Noleeens and Mayor Christof for attending and mingling with the crowds. Shakespear and his *Merry Men* of TTM did a great job of heading off trouble before it started.

Stay tuned for next weeks event in Trinsic......the COS Scavenger Hunt.

CounterPoint: Scrooge McDuck
Submitted Saturday, February 16, 2002 - 4:45:36 PM by Noleeens

NoleeensAnother guest rant from Ra'Dian Fl'Gith - He's on a roll and I won't be the one to slow him down *smiles* - I gladly welcome his point of view....Nols

Impy's makes money. We all know it. Any of us who has put an item up for bid knows it. Where does that money go? Personally I would bet that it goes to those who work the events, and I'm sure part of it remains around for he who owns the place. Five percent, what a magical number, eh? I'm sure someone could definitely get rich out of holding auctions for big ticket items and charging five percent on what that item goes for.

The question we have to ask ourselves is, "Is this a bad thing?"

I enjoy myself when I go to Impy's, and based on the number of people who attend the auction on a regular basis, so too do the people who attend. Runes to Riches and other games that go on are a lot of fun, and add a twist to the auction. Admittedly, R2R requires you buy a rune, and they don't start until the vendor is sold out, so they sell, at 1,000gp each, 125 runes, for a grand total of 125,000gp. If you win, you win 10x the amount rolled on the "magical dice." That's up to 120,000gp. Admittedly, most nights it's not, but hey... the chance exists. Where does the extra money for R2R go? Well, I don't know for sure, but with runes selling for about 6gp each and black pearl at 5gp, blood moss at 5gp, and mandrake root at 3gp, that's an expense of 19gp per rune. That's 2375gp in expense (at bare minimum) for one game. That doesn't count the extra rune that Dawn usually has to recall to and get into place. That also doesn't count the intense amount of time it takes to mark 125 runes. At 20 mana per spell, and 100 INT, that's 2,500 mana. And walking around and marking and... wow. The fact that they do two of these a week alone boggles my mind.

Then there's the new "You might be a somebody or another if..." game. Fifty thousand in auction credit. Okay, so it's not tangible gold you hold in your hand. As a winner of the event, it is tangible when you buy yourself a nice kryss of vanquishing for 100k. Because all of a sudden it only costs 50k. Yes, 50k is rediculous for a kryss of any sort, and I don't generally spend money on anything, because generally, I don't have money. Yeah, you read it here... My bank account generally holds no more than 250,000k across all characters. How's any fourth year vet hold his head high and say that? Well... we won't go into the inumerate ways I've spent the money I've amassed over the years, including helping out others. Or that when I go fighting in a dungeon, I usually let "the other guy" take the loot or if I think I've taken too much, I hand it off to someone else, just because, in all honesty, what am I EVER going to do with millions of gold? Me? Buy pretty rares for my house. But having been in this game over the past four years, I already have a LOT of rares that weren't so rare when I got them. No, my collection isn't complete, and yes, there's things I'd like, but I digress... The point is, that 50k in credit comes right out of their pockets.

Finally, the auction itself. Generally there's five or six people working on any night. Now, I will preface what I'm about to say with the fact that I do not know if Impy's staff is paid. I certainly hope they are, because they quite well deserve it. What happens to that money is entirely up to them however. They deserve it though. Anyone who can pull off such an event deserves to make something off of it. The gods know that they're making an inordinate amount of money for those who put their items up for auction. If an item sells for 1,000,000gp, Impy's gets 50k. The person whose item it was gets 950,000gp. Look at those figures closely. One million gold. 50,000 gold. 950,000 gold. Now I don't know about you, but I'd gladly sacrifice 50,000 gold for someone to make me 950,000 more. Sure there are online auction places where you can sell your stuff, but the fact is, Impy's is in game. It is a player run establishment, and it promotes in-game interaction. I prefer that to playing my UO on uo-auction.com. I really do.

So the Auction for Friends went over well, and over two million gold was brought in for the [young] fund. This is a good thing. The profits were already set to go to a charity as it was. There's nothing wrong with that either. I will say that to try and shame an in-game establishment by wondering where all that gold goes is shameful in and of itself. If people felt ripped off at Impy's, they just simply would not go. I don't get that impression of Impy's at all. And the people who put on that event twice a week work very hard to do so. After all, the Auction for Friends was exhausting... and that was just one event. Why should not the people who toil to bring us Impy's make a little for their efforts as well?

Scrooge McDuck and his Giant Money Bin
Submitted Saturday, February 16, 2002 - 2:37:36 AM by Noleeens

NoleeensWell it has certainly been an interesting week. A mysterious girl named Jasmine was found to be wearing the Gem of Souls ring; UOHOC said Tailoring BOD’s are in the works and Bards and Tamers will be nerfed next; the Herald got ‘FAT’; a sheep was sacrificed in Trinsic and a book about the return of Martoo Saul found; the Gurtha Fea started hunting poor Jasmine; and, Trinsic Town Council and the Sandlewood Box Inn had an auction.

*pauses to let that last event sink in*

Noleeens in currently holding the position of Minister of Foreign Affairs on the Trinsic Town Council. One of the big goals of the TTC is to bring life back to Trinsic. To hold events for everyone to attend: crafters faires, skill competitions, dances, dinners, hunts, and some other fun things. Well part of that is finding the people. Now a lot of guilds have already stepped forward and given not only their blessing, but pledged their assistance in this cause. WOOOHOOO. But what about the new people? Those [Young] ones that float around our land, those that haven’t RP’d yet but want to give it a try, those that are seasoned players but have no guild and seek out something like what we offer. So we sat down and came up with the Trinsic Young Fund. A small sum of gold that could be used by folks on the Council to help bring others to us, or to help someone meet a training goal, to use as prizes or to buy prizes for events… Anyway, you get the picture.. We want to help, but we need some gold to make it easier on us.

We decided to have an auction. We would get some exposure - that’s a good thing. We could charge 5% of the sale like Impy’s does - (I believe RDs was even charging a percentage before they went on break… but I haven’t been there is quite some time, so I cannot confirm that.) That should net us a the gold we hoped to make (it important to note I was aiming low here - and thinking if we can clear a couple 100K, we would really be in a good shape!)

White Lotus went to work and weaved her “Events Coordinator” type magic. Before I knew it, we had donations pouring in for our auction. Then word got around and friends started bringing in some rather big ticket items (lots of vet statues, ethereals, and holiday items from past years, etc).

The auction was a bigger success that I would have ever imagined it could be. We had a good group of people there - some of them hardcore Fellucians that rarely go to Trammel and some of them very old school players - who came out to help a good cause. Oh, and Rikus managed to GM Inscription while he was there donating a good amount of gold to our fund - Congrats again Rikus!

The next day I made my way to the bank with all the checks and the sale list in hand. I cashed in the checks and remade the checks to go back to the players that had brought us items to sell (keeping my 5% for the TYF) and when I was all done I said the magic word - anticipating what would be left over for our fund - “BALANCE!”

Errr --- Uhhh --- Freakin WOW!

I had originally hoped to clear a couple 100K. The Trinsic Young Fund has just over 2 million gold pieces in it. A big giant thanks to all those that came out to support our event!!

Last night I handed out checks to the folks that donated items and thanked them profusely for their items and their donations. Still in awe, I stepped away from my PC and went to soak in a hot bath. While I was there, soaking and thinking of the last weeks events, I contemplated what people had been asking me since our auction earlier that week - “When is the next one?”

Auctions are exhausting. Trust me on this. I didn’t want to become an auction house. I just wanted to raise a little gold for my Young Fund.

But wow - if I made over 2 million in one evening - just think how much a place like Impy’s must make every week!

It’s a good thing I was already laying down when that last thought hit me. JUST HOW MUCH DOES A PLACE LIKE IMPY’S TAKE IN EVERY WEEK - AND WTF DO THEY DO WITH ALL THAT GOLD?!??!

So I left word for Impy himself - he never responded. So I went to the auction last night to see for myself just how much they took on an average night.

jim spellhurler had the night off, no sign of Garber around... Impy's staff on hand for the evening included Ashley, Violet, Lady Dawn, Pratt and Laurel.

It was announced that there was a contest on the Impy's website worth 50k in auction credit. There was no winner in last nights Runes 2 Riches game.

I personally bid 1.9 before the auctioneer called 'sold!' and after acknowledging my bid, she let it go for 1.7 to the previous bidder...(85k - but this was a donated item which would lead me to believe ... 1.7Mil in profit :/ )

At 5% of the sales... that's 5,000,050 profit for the evening...

If you factor in the Mystery Chest as pure profit... that's a grand total of… DUN DUN DUN -- 6 Million 6 Hundred and 15 Thousand and 50 gold pieces PROFIT.

And that was one night. The auction house wasn’t even full. Even if you factor in that he may pay his staff a salary to bring the public these auctions… there were only 5 people on hand. Maybe I missed one, give them the benefit of the doubt - say 6 people for the evening. Now even grossly overpaying them to stand around for 3 hours - say he pays them 100K a piece to work the auction - that’s still only 600K out of 6 MILLION IN PROFITS!

Do they math with me for a few minutes. Impy’s has been running auctions for how long? Well I didn’t know the exact answer to that question - so I turned to their website for some help. The first news item was posted March 27, 2001. That’s 47 weeks x one auction a week at (I will lowball it) and say 4 million in profits. That’s 188 Million.

IN PROFIT!

A look back on the Impy’s timeline:

March 27, 2001 - The website goes up.
May 8, 2001 - They celebrated the fact that they had “given away over 1.2 MILLION in gold to date in that game".
May 24, 2001 - A second auction is held this week to accommodate all the items.
June 13, 2001 - The Mystery Chest becomes a item donated from an outside source
June 14, 2001 - Another second auction this week
July 30, 2001 - Another second auction

At this point the second weekly auction seems to become a pretty regular thing.

August 30, 2001 - Using his website to advertise it, Impy places an order across the land of Sosaria for 180 fishing nets (with another 60 to be needed in the near future) Here’s the quote from the website: “We've got enough in the new event fund to pay 5k per net. We'll accept any amount from 1 to 240 nets. For those who prefer to donate to the new event, we do heartily accept donations of nets (or gold to purchase them)."

They are basically saying they have at least 1.2 mil in the event fund at this point. Anyone else having trouble believing its anywhere close to JUST 1.2 mil?

August 31, 2001 - They announced that in the month of August alone they sold over 100 million gold pieces in items… the exact reported figure for this month was 109,153,000. That’s 5,457,650 in profit for the math challenged. They also officially announced that the second weekly auction was here to stay.

That was roughly 24 weeks ago. 4 million profit per auction (remember, I lowballed it based on last nights sales) x two nights a week x 24 weeks = 192 Million in profit. Even if you take half that amount - say 100 million - what do you do with 100 million in gold? A typical person with a large windfall of gold might invest in rares - if you look around Impy’s there are quite a few rares on display - but most of them have been on display for quite some time. I couldn’t find someplace on their website that showed how much the staff gets paid. Is the surplus of gold being anonymously given away to newbies? Are the staff members of Impys getting wealthy off your 5 percent? Is there an ebay account out there selling off this gold? (Just imagine, 192 million x the average lowballed ebay price of 1 million gold = $3,840 US dollars!) And if so, who see’s the cash?

Sept 17, 2001 - They started giving away 50k per week on the website in auction credit.
(22 weeks x 50k per week = 1, 100, 000 out of 192 mil profit)

Where does this gold go? I left a couple of messages for Impy asking for a bit of his time to get his input on this article but apparently it is against Impy's policy to grant interviews. His staff was also instructed of this policy. *shrugs*

Someone sent this reporter a copy of an ICQ log that contained some pretty interesting information. Seems one of the folks responsible for Impy’s was recently caught red-handed destroying advertising materials at another Trammel auction house. On a separate but related note, Impy himself was not to pleased the Sandlewood had stepped into the ‘auction’ market. I think he preferred we stay in the ‘event’ market only.

I can tell you this. Unless I have reason to raise more gold for the Trinsic Young Fund, I see no reason to charge any player a percentage of the sale. Not in this days economy. Not at these sale prices. And certainly, never again, at 5 percent.

I leave it to you, the player, who works hard for their items, and hard for their gold, to decide what is being done with the profits that little dwarf is rolling around in.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

***Addendum to this article

It has been brought to my attention that my math sucks!

And the person that brought it to my attention certainly couldn't be farther from the truth *chuckles*

For all the folks that fell in to the 'math challenged' category I mentioned above -- feel free to put me in the 'black kettle' category. *smiles*

So here's the fresh math - checked and rechecked... and well.. you should probably redo the math yourself, as we have already decided I am no Lars Ahlfors.

Valentines Night Auction TOTAL PROFIT (at 5% of the Mystery Chest) 415,050
With the Mystery Chest at FULL PROFIT the total take for the night is 2,030,050
(Seems I mistakenly added in the NOSALEs - bleh)

So if I lowball my *coughs* corrected *coughs* estimate of what they take in per week down to 2 mil (using 1 mil per auction night) and multiply that by the 24 weeks used in the example above..... that comes down to 48 Million.

Half the amount I originally estimated.

I wrote the article. I asked for Impy's input. I was refused an interview on the grounds all interviews are against Impy's policy. I apologize for the incorrect math - but quite frankly, a simple interview could have resolved this on the spot. And before you get all freaky on me and say it could have been reported with the correct math figures if I had simply checked my math - I used an Excel spreadsheet to do it... *laughs* But if you dont put the amounts in the right place, your formulas still do not work. Now the article stands with this correction.

[18:49] [WLotus-TTC] it starts at 9 pm cst so 3 hours and 15 minutes
[18:49] [Mooley-ToM] he states you may bring as many guards as you like - all will be protected
[18:49] [Noleeens] If I need guards to go to the temple we have bigger problems than I thought....
[18:49] [Mooley-ToM] :)
[18:49] [WLotus-TTC] she should be safe there
[18:50] [Mooley-ToM] may i return to him now? he treats me so bad if i am late
[18:50] [WLotus-TTC] or to put it bluntly she better be safe there
[18:50] [Noleeens] Aye Mooley, tell Raticker I will be there in a bit to speak with him.
[18:50] [Mooley-ToM] oh thank you mistress!

So I wrapped up what I was doing. logged into UO and headed to the Temple....

When I arrived at the Temple Raticker greeted me, and asked that I come upstairs.. There, refreshments were laid out waiting for my arrival - a very nice touch.

Raticker began..."It seems my mouth has been placed in a position which my heart does not wish to be."

Having not responded to the many news stories that had been reported the last few days Raticker wanted to take this opportunity to speak with someone, to let his opinion be stated, and perhaps straighten a few things out.

...His guild was NOT happy with him
...He was fined 50k for his actions (the day after the incident reported) Raticker was given until the guild meeting Monday to come up with the funds.
...Anyone is welcome to come and see the payment being made

"In regards to being thrown out of the guild, I must only ponder why folks would want to see this. Those who seemingly have requested my removal I have not seen nor spoken with in months. To them I say: I believe this whole mess is punishment enough and the whole community should not the loyalty and commitment ToM has to each of its members. Yes, I made a mistake. Yes, I am sorry for the disturbance it has caused. But we must move thru this. I still want to participate. My guild wants me. (For now), hehe."

He asked then if I had any questions....

I asked for clarification: "For whomever to ask for your removal from the guild... do you see it as a sort of justification for Flight having been removed from B-D?

"I would not be able to comment as I am not aware of the situation. So far Flight has been a pretty good member from what I have observed."

"What are your current thoughts on Basil?"

"I have had no interaction with Basil for many months, until there begain posts of me on the boards and requests for my excommunication. Once we RPd well together I thought. I do not like attacks on people who are simply living in the community and interacting with others. Trying to intimidate another guild to
a specific action is wrong to me personally, but he may feel the way he wants just as long as he does not hurt anyone."

"Do you think he was trying to intimidate ToM into a specific action?"

"For some reason I believe he wanted ToM to remove me from the guild. I am not sure why. As I said I am paying a price for my actions."

"And the current status of the EoA? Any thoughts on that...?

"Though I am a member of the council the activity of ToM has been limited as prescribed by the Prophet Mondain. Empress Eowen drives EoA activities."

"From reading the boards today.. I find that B-D will very shortly be without a home. Will ToM be offering them a roof?"

"I have had no conversation in that arena with Mordain."

I didnt really have much else to ask Raticker and he didn't have anything else he wanted to touch on... So I called the interview over and we parted in peace...

Laterzzz

By Twilight Rises the Spirit of Junin Pince
Submitted Friday, February 15, 2002 - 7:10:36 PM by Nick Seafort

Nick SeafortFrom Aurian La`Coeur:

Darkness fell upon the tower of the Legion of Undead. A faint light flickered upon the altar, starlight reflecting in a crystal ball beside EdGuardo's lifeless body. The stars shimmered diligently overhead, even as clouds gathered to obscure their radiance. Then body of Edguardo was immersed in darkness.

Two figures entered, one from each wing of the tower. The Vampire Lord Evilice took the hand of Aurian La'Coeur as they approached the altar and stood on either side of the body. Both were intoxicated already by the power of a meditative trance. Evilice closed his eyes in meditation as he spoke:

"O Great Humakt, God of Death, grant us the power to bind the body of this mortal to the soul of Junin Pince."

The clouds churned into a maelstrom which thrashed wildly overhead as Evilice took a dagger and cut his wrist deep, allowing his blood to spill into the corpse of EdGuardo. Aurian followed suit, making a cut in her wrist to allow her blood to mingle with that of her Lord within the corpse. Suddenly the tempest stopped, and a deathlike stillness settled upon the roof of the tower. Junin had arrived...

Aurian waved her hand through the ethereal spectre holding a bandage, her eyes closed in silent prayer. The ghost dissolved into the corpse slowly, and he who was once EdGuardo drew breath as Junin Pince.

"I hope you have found me a suitable host," Junin uttered, inspecting himself. "Ah...EdGuardo, my arch nemesis. His soul was filled with virtue, yet his body still gleams with magical energy."

"Martoo Saul has already arrived, and will be looking for you," Evilice said with a crooked grin.

Junin smiled, cackling softly to himself. "Aye, we have spoken. I must go and prepare." He ran to the stairs, quickly adjusting to his new body, then turned to flash a malicious smile. "The world will be cleansed!" He ran down the stairs and out of the tower, into the waiting darkness of the Britain forest.

Evilice smiled at Aurian. "It has begun..."

Ash and Victoria Longbow to tie the knot!
Submitted Friday, February 15, 2002 - 3:36:36 PM by Nick Seafort

Nick SeafortThe Royal Knights of Redemption and the Yew Militia are celebrating today, celebrating the announcement that Ash and Victoria Longbow are to be wed! Perparations are already underway to decorate the area near the Falls of Justice in Trammel, some distance east of Yew. It is because of this distance that complimentary runes will be handed out to guests at the Empath Abbey, as well as the village of Newcastle.

Ceremonies are slated to begin on February 17 at 6 in the evening (CT). The whole of Britannia is invited to share in the event.

And I've About Had It...
Submitted Thursday, February 14, 2002 - 6:39:21 PM by Nick Seafort

Nick SeafortThis is a guest rant from Ra'Dian Fl'Gith, it was sent to me as a news item for posting, and I considered not posting it on the grounds that it is an Editorial, but since it is so well written I decided to go ahead and post it. If you wish to comment on this column, there are already several threads in progress on the Message Board

I don't normally post rants anywhere but upon my own website. Nor do I generally explode about things publically. However, I'm about fed up with Mordain's twisting of what is truth and fact and turning it into a vendetta against all who would take part of the Empire / non-Empire plotlines. I cannot count on all of the available digits of my body the number of people who tire of Mordain's incessant raving over how this or that does not apply to him but applies to everyone else.

This is a simple matter. Mordain and thereby his members are above all recourse for their actions. Me, when I had a guild, I had to answer to any issues that arose, and I had to deal with them forthwith. While CAD and the URKs were warred, one of my members started swearing around the orc camp being a kewl dewd. My response? I told that member that he had five minutes to show up at the orc camp with (I don't remember the exact amount, but it was something like 5 or 10k) gold, and to get there and apologize to the orcs immediately for his behavior. Else he was gone from the guild. Period. And yeah, guild issues always become a he said/she said issue. They always do. Generally a guildmaster would like to think that all of their guildmates are 100% trustworthy and would never do anything wrong. Unfortunately, that's not the case. Especially when enters the "I pay my 10 bucks" issue.

And that's correct. You pay your ten bucks. I've had members of CAD say that to me at times. My response has always been, "Yes, you pay your ten bucks. But while you're in my guild, you obey CAD rules. If you don't want to, leave. Period." That's what needs to happen. I would boot my own friends out of the guild if I thought they weren't going to be able to live up to CAD standards. Which, quite frankly, is why CAD has become what it is today... Most of the core of CAD is not on at the same time, and so I made the difficult decision to put CAD on the backburner and take it in a new direction. This is a guild that at its end was formed of people I consider my friends whether I met them in real life or not. So personally, I'm about fed up with the "He's my friend, I won't boot him from the guild" garbage. Either control your guild, or resign and let someone who CAN do so.

This crap I just read on a board about how the EoA / Serps Hold battles were sided so that EoA would lose is a bunch of balogna too. Of course, a lot of this comes as posturing from Mordain telling people what they want so desperately to hear. The truth of the matter is that EoA could use a couple of lessons in tactics. I don't mean that as an insult either... I simply think they need to learn to work better as an empire. Not just as individual guilds.

Personally, I respect EoA. I even used to respect ToM, but every time one of his members comes under scrutiny, we're all lying, we're all editing our journal logs, we're all falsifying pictures. I have NEVER edited my journals logs to show something that didn't happen happened the way I wanted it to. I've edited a total of ONE picture in my life to show something different than what I saw because I took a screenshot of a blue, and he was gray to my guildmate, so when I posted the story about that person on our website, I changed his name from blue to gray to reflect what my guildmate saw. ONCE. I am a firm believer in truth. If the CAD website were still up, I could show you a conversation that took place between myself and the then leaders of OCW when CAD formed from old OCW members... it wasn't pretty, but I posted it because I believe in the truth. You could search my archives (again, if I hadn't recently taken the CAD site down to make room for the Dracona site) for examples where internal guild politics were posted on the website. I hide nothing, and I'm not afraid to admit that CAD's done something wrong.

I've had experiences with Mordain that make me cringe these days. The incident where ToM showed up at Ed's execution even after Mordain assured me he was forgoing ToM's claim to see Ed die... ToM and CAD ended up fighting because ToM attacked those who showed up with me to rescue Ed, and CAD fought back. Even then, I was simply going to move on and declare ToM an enemy instead of an ally and go forth with roleplay. But that didn't happen, and CAD cut ties to ToM completely because Mordain told me how he'd seen an attack on his fiance's screen and that I had attacked her first. Of course, he didn't know it was me... he thought it was someone else. And rightfully it was... I wasn't playing Ra at the time, and I didn't expect to be treated as such. However, I didn't expect that he'd accuse the character I was playing of lying and of falsifying journals to make it look like Iris had attacked that character twice (which, indeed she had). What was a simple "You're no longer an ally of ours," turned into me cancelling all relations with ToM just because it wasn't worth the headache.

From the Empire's point of view, ToM has been involved and not involved and involved again and not involved again and involved again so many times it's not even funny. And still EoA jumps to ToM's defense and follows Mord like he's just peachy and has never had a single problem.

This was a simple issue. By ToM's own standards that were posted on their website... you know:

- ToM members are expected to stay in-character at all times while logged in on a ToM-guilded character. This includes the usage of RP-appropriate language.

- Whatever you call it, "dewd-speak", "l33t-speak", or anything else, we don’t do it. We do not say "ownage" or "roxxor" or any of that foul gibberish. We don’t like to hear it, either.

- ToM members do not complain in game. - We do not complain, and we do not whine.

- ToM adheres to the "15 minute" rule.

It would have been nice if Mordain had responded to Raticker's breach of character and of the new All RP All The Time rules of ToM. Instead the community got a big middle finger extended with the words "He's my friend." I would have been happy if Mordain had said "You know, Rat's been fined 25k, and told not to do it again." Instead, we get the "It's okay for Rat to do what he wants because he's my friend," treatment.

I know that I'll be branded "Jealous" or "Misleading" or just "Kissing Basil's Hind-End," and none of it could be further from the truth. Anyone who has ever dealt with me knows that I speak for myself, of myself, and only what I feel is true. And I'm tired of seeing this crap. I've said it a million times that I'm amazed anyone can get any RP done in this world because we're always at each others' throats. I don't understand how it is that everyone feels they're above someone else or that so and so's participation is unrequired. Personally, even today, I would still RP with ToM because I don't like discluding anyone from events. But I would expect that ToM adhere to their own rules and rules of whatever event was in place. And if Mordain would step back and realize that no, in fact, his members are NOT perfect, and are NOT above the community as a whole... and with regards to winning and losing battles... unfortunately someone ALWAYS has to lose in a win/lose situation. I respect the Empire, and I think they could be turned into a huge force of evil to act as an antagonist to the good of the land. But not if every time we turn around the result of a battle wasn't that people didn't work together as well as they might have or that the opposing force happened to be working together extremely well, but instead that someone was plotting to keep the Empire down. I've never heard such errant rubbish in my life. I certainly wouldn't take part in an event where the outcome was predetermined. This first battle in Serp's was a learning event, and yes, some changes need be made, but overall, why shouldn't it be looked upon as having fun? What did ANYONE lose in the event? A little bit of fame?

So for crying out loud, instead of bashing each other over the head, let's ALL step forward, and ALL take responsibility for our own guilds and guildmates, and instead of pointing fingers, let's work together. It's said that no one likes losing. Me, I would LOVE to lose, because it would mean that I'd have something to plan for in the future. I don't like close-ended plots. I'd like to someday sit back, look at Great Lakes, and say "I'm a part of that." I'd like to look at a fully working community that works TOGETHER. Instead, we have egos left and right. And that's not to say that the good folks are exhonorated from this... that's to say that everyone should stick to their word. I would expect that if one of OSS were caught doing what Raticker did that there'd be some sort of public announcement that it had been dealt with. I don't expect that Raticker should be immediately tossed from the guild, but there should have been SOME reprimand made other than a stern talking to. I'll close on an event that few know happened in CAD.

One of my members who admittedly is a little trigger happy at times didn't understand some of the finer workings of the new community that we had just become a part of, and attacked a couple of EoA in Serp's Hold. I admit I got a bit fed up initially because I heard about it from four or five sources, including the member that had acted up... but that was because it was my understanding that it had been dealt with between him and the parties involved, and that it was all okay. So when I DID hear about it from outside sources, I was a bit upset that I was. But I did listen, and I then turned around and gave the member one of the longest gripe sessions he'd ever been part of. Especially since he hadn't read the website I'd set up with all kinds of information. In the end, I also spoke to the parties involved and ensured the situation was taken care of, and I told this member of mine that he had to stick to abiding by the rules. If he did not, he could find himself removed from the guild because I had promised that CAD would abide by the RP rules. He understood, and it was the last issue I had with him. No, it wasn't made public, but I did make sure that those involved were aware that things had been taken care of, AND made sure it was to their satisfaction.

If I can do it, why can't others? Together we could create a great community. Divided, we'll all be roleplaying to headless, ratmen, and trees.

Empire of Armageddon withdraws from Serpents Hold seige
Submitted Thursday, February 14, 2002 - 2:12:02 AM by Nick Seafort

Nick SeafortEarly this morning, forces loyal to the Serpents Hold Alliance reported that EoA troops were withdrawing from the city in haste. This comes after almost a season of conflict between the opposing forces.

I spoke with several members of the Serpents Hold Alliance to get their views from the front lines:

"The Empire has been driven out of the Hold, and with it goes the last remnants of cowardice on the island." declared General Nero. Athelstan chimed in, "We were better trained...better prepared... and we had the virtues on our side!" Nero added "why they left.. most likely to set their sights on peasants and miners, much like their last incursion into Minoc." I asked their thoughts on EoA returning to the Hold anytime soon. Everyone agreed that they would. "Evil is like a roach, you squish one in a garbage pile and they scatter, but eventually they come back to feed once more." Nero explained. Aryn contnued, "Evil never sleeps.. and the forces of good shall always remain vigilant."

So, for now the citizens of Serpent's Hold sleep safe in their beds, but for how long? An empire warrior named Dervla was overheard musing the answer:

"Discouraged and beaten back time after time, the forces of EoA retreat back into darkness to regain their strength "

Thursday Development Update - 14 Feb 2002
Submitted Thursday, February 14, 2002 - 1:22:16 AM by Nick Seafort

Nick SeafortGrüße!

Welcome to the special valentines edition of the Thursday Development Update.. now with impressive new icon! the graphic to the right of this paragraph. Impressive, no? Well, I thought so anyways. I also have a new "EXCLUSIVE!" icon for those reports that are just, well.. exclusive! Cool huh? Anyways, enough about me, lets get to the meat.

Hmm.. what ever could be the big Dev story on a day like today? I'm just gonan take a stab and say that its the widespread release of the Lord Blackthorns Revenge expansion to UO.. (perhaps you read the review 2 articles down). Rather than go through all that rigamarole you've been hearing since October, I'll just hit the highlights. Heres the skinny on LBR:

  • Lets you access Ilshenar in 2d
  • Plays MP3 instead of MIDI
  • Lets you see very limited new art in 2d
  • Makes all 2d trees purty
  • Will get you killed in PvP by anyone on the Ren client

Coincedentally, for all of you who play in other countries, your shipping is handled locally, so theres no telling when they'll get around to it.

Overall, its not too bad, but I wouldn't rush out the door to buy one. You have to pay 30 bucks for EVERY account that you want to experience the LBR additions with. I was clever and called it a "valentines day gift" for my sweetie. Brownie points, AND a game review with one stone.. I AM THE SMARTEST MAN ALIVE!

Okay, so maybe I am not the smartest man alive after all.. But I know someone who isnt even in the running. NPC bankers! (hows that for a segway). NPC bankers are no longer accepting bank checks. If you want to cash a check, you have to go and double click it in your bankbox now. The change was presumably made in order to curb exploiting.

Did you ever wonder where your favorite NPC guild went? Well, I bet you didn't, but I will tell you anyway! All NPC guilds except for the Thieves Guild have been removed from the game. Tajima says, "They were never implemented fully and we did not have any designs to extend them."

Additionally, the Bulk Order Deed system is getting a tweak.. or ten. some of which have already been implemented:

  • Ancient Hammers will get more charges
  • Mining gloves may be changed to run out of charges
  • Fame gain fom BOD's is lower now, because blacksmiths seldom die
  • Possibile addition of weapon LBODs

Speaking of tweaks, the LBR Avatars haven't been released just yet because "they still require tweaking". Nobody really knows what that means, but there you are.

Tajima made a Pretty big speech over on the UO.com boards this week outlining the plans for UO's future.
Thanks for your feedback.

Right now, we're focusing on many changes that the players themselves have been openly invited to comment on. (Taming, Barding, Risk vs. Reward in Felucca Changes, etc.) There will be more features and changes open for discussion in the near future.

We've also spent much of the past year improving the underlying code base. (Bugs are at an all-time low and server availability is at an all-time high.) We've integrated the Bulk Order Deed system for Blacksmiths, and of course your favorite, the Virtue System. We've completely rewritten the new player experience to include useful tutorial quests. We've also introduced what we feel is the most aggressive and meaningful episodic content program in the industry, while also releasing the most polished and (if pre-orders are any indication) successful expansion to UO ever. Oh, and we're laying the foundations for another expansion, as well.

We didn't just decide to do all this on a whim. We listen to our players, and keep activity logs of what's going on in the game. Our resources aren't infinite, so we focus on the features that have the most appeal for the most players. "Bang for the Buck," if you will.

In a moment of exasperation a former Prime Minister of France once bemoaned the difficulty of governing a country with over 5000 different kinds of cheeses. This humorous anecdote is loosely applicable to UO, which is certainly the broadest and deepest PSW on the market. The incredible diversity of playstyles UO offers can make development and support challenging, to be sure. No changes are trivial, and nothing is ever easy. Most dev team members wind up working nights (check the time of this post) and weekends to make the game the best it can be. (Remember, we're gamers, too.)

Despite our ongoing efforts, however, we may not be able to make every player completely happy all the time. (If only we'd been able to finish the feature that issued winning lottery numbers to our players...) Even so, rest assured we're constantly striving to achieve that goal.

Perhaps as a side note here, they changed uoconcerns@uo.com to gmreviews@uo.com.. its a PR thing I guess.

Player response this week has been outrageous over the new expansion. the most common sentiment seems to be "I paid 30 dollars for THIS?" followed closely by "Wheres all the new stuff I was promised?". so far as I can tell, there were only a few people who were pleased with the client, but nobody I talked to considered it to be "impressive".

Though its not Development related, I thought I would add it here because it affects many of you.. the Serpents Hold Alliance vs Empire of Armageddon seige of Serpents Hold has been delayed by a week, and should resume this Monday, barring complications. If there is a change, We'll be sure to let you know.

Thats about it for this week, stay tuned for continuing coverage of the 2002 Winter Olympic games! Oh.. wait.. wrong news service.

Rangers Found Dead!
Submitted Wednesday, February 13, 2002 - 11:11:25 PM by Jeremiah Cruz

Jeremiah CruzEarlier today I was called to one of the Ranger Huts outside of Skara Brae. Evidentally one of the rangers that lived there had come back to find two of her fellow rangers slain and stripped of all belongings.

I arrived at the scene and found what she said to be indeed true. I looked around the room and found no sign of disturbance. Whoever did this was very stealthy. Obviously the rangers didn't have time to know what hit them.

I found Rockie, the guildmaster of the Skara Brae Rangers, at the local tavern and asked him some questions about the killings.

"Rockie, I've heard that there have been more than one of these murders." Rockie nodded, "Yes, there have been several actually. Yet these are more close to town. The others were rangers out on patrol or animals horribly mutilated."

I could see that he was disturbed by the recent happenings. "Do you think it was the Gurtha'Fea?" Rockie started laughing, "No, whatever is doing this is much more powerful than those sheep. I could hear a Gurtha'whatever coming from a mile away!"

"Erm, ok... Then what do you think it is?" He shrugged...

"Whatever it is, its not very nice, and its making its way closer and closer to town..."

Lord Blackthorn: Naughty or Nice?
Submitted Wednesday, February 13, 2002 - 5:18:26 PM by Nick Seafort

Nick SeafortFinally, my quest has come to an end! I finally was able to snatch a copy of LBR from my local Electronics Boutique. Despite the fancy french word, there was a nerdy fellow behind the counter.. the only person besides myself in the store. Not suprising at 1PM on a Wednesday, I suppose. I promised the nerdy guy that I would mention him in my review article.. so heres a shout out to my homie, the EB Nerdy guy! (I convieniently neglected to tell him the URL for the site)

You've all seen the artwork done by Todd McFarlane on the cover of the box.. so I wont go into that.. but what I will go into is the sheer wierdness which is the UO: LBR packaging. I dunno, maybe I am not "in the know" but I do consider myself a bit of an avid gamer. I own over 600 different PC and console games, and not one of them has ever come in a cardboard box this small. Its maybe 7 inches tall, 5 inches wide and 3 inches deep. Even though I knew what the cover looked like, it took me a full 3 minutes to find the box. It was sandwiched between an Everquest expansion and the Jumbo sized Anarchy Online box.

As with many PC game boxes these days, the front of the box opens up.. but whats unique about the LBR box is that it has a clear plastic window, in which you can see the much acclaimed Lord Blackthorn doll. The whole thing looks like a toy box.. so much like a toy box in fact that I had to do a double take.. was this actually the game, or was it one of Mcfarlanes UO creations? The ESRB rating and system requrements clued me in.

After the EB Nerdy guy had exacted Lord EA's revenge on my pocketbook, I deftly sped out of the Electonics Boutique and found myself face to face with Abercrombie and Fitch. CURSED BUGGERS!

Oh.. where was I? I jumped into the Heraldmobile and sped post-haste to the haven which is my computer room. There, I was suprised to find the package had neither been taped, nor shrinkwrapped. Odd, but certainly not distracting. I dove in!

The first artifact which extracted from the less than cavernous box was the Lord Blackthorn doll. I say doll, because he is most definately not an action figure. Attached to the same cardboard backing is Lord Blackthorns athsma inhaler. Why an athsma inhaler? I have no idea, but he must get some powerful athsma attacks, because that suckers as big as his entire torso! I carefully placed Blackthorn aside.. he would see action soon enough vs Gi Joe and the Exo Squad in my bathtub.

The next item unearthed from the LBR box excavation was a map.. not a cloth map mind you, one printed in lightweight poster paper. The map features Britannia and the Lost Lands on one side, and Ilshenar on the other. There is not a single runic letter on the entire thing. Whats more.. it smelled funny, like old people smel, you know? I unfolded it and set it on top of my monitor to flatten it out, as it had been folded up.

Eagerly, I returned to the box.. this time to discover the fascinating world of the LBR instruction manual. Aside from the kewl instruction booklet cover, I found it to be of little use. At least it was somewhat up to date. I set it on the map before it.

There wasn't much left in the box, so I reached my hand in and drew the next thing I felt. My efforts were rewarded with a pocket sized comic book. I would have read it right there and then, but my body was quivering so much with anticipation, the words were a blur. The pictures sure were pretty though. At first I thought the main character was Joan of Arc, but it turns out shes just Dawn. Oh, bother. I tossed it aside.

At this point, I was eager to see what other treasures awaited me.. I'm afraid my enthusiasm got he better of me, as I dumped the contents of the box onto my computer desk. Two items sprang from its illuminated recesses.. the game CD itself and a reference card.

I spent exactly 2 seconds looking at the reference card, and there were 2 things I noted about it. 1. Its brown. 2. You can walk with the right mouse button. The game CD was slightly more interesting, but they didnt spirng for a jewel case.. it was just a plain old cardboard case.

The CD itself was printed on one side and shiny on the other! My amazement knew no bounds, so gingerly I opened my DVD-ROM tray and after some debate over which side went up, I inserted the disc.

Soon thereafter I was greeted by an antoplay menu.. did I want 2d or 3d? Well, I wanted both, but I didn't tell it that.. I chose to install the 2d first, because odd numbers piss me off. After answering rudimentary questions like "Are you sure you want to install?" and "You already haev the old UO installed, ar you really sure you want to install over it?" I was watching pictures of dorky people playing UO as the prograss bar slowly filled. I would have dismissed this as ordinary, but I noticed something odd.. one man was playing UO with his cat, and the other man looked like a biker.. and heres the oddest part.. he had a UO Third Dawn poster on the wall behind him. Both of these men apparently cannot play UO without dynamic colored lighting.. one glowed a light yellow, and the other an incandescent blue. I made a mental note to make sure that I should never let my cat play UO.

I left to partake of the Elixir of life which most mortals refer to as chocolate milk, and when I returned I found a dialogue box waiting for me. "you already hav DirectX, man. like, you wanna do all that again?" I said no.. work scares me. Then the program was very insistant that I go to the UO webpage and upgrade my account. Snickering, I tricked it by hitting "next" and soon the installation was complete.

I noticed a new and shiny icon had appeared on my desktop (the only icon which was somehow lined up with another icon) I scooted the icon about a half inch to the right, just so it wouldnt be so freaking orderly. I then fired up the UO, and watched as my hopes and dreams begin to coalesce in digital form.

I was greeted with the familiar 2D login screen.. grey and blue. For kicks, I hit the "movie" button, but nothing happened. Disappointed I tyyped in my username and password, and before I knew it I was standing in my house. I strode aroud the jungles, around the forest, and in Trinsic.. and heres what I can tell you. LBR is just like the old 2D, except the treed, rooftops, and most pathway tiles haev been replaced with the old Third Dawn textures. the only thing which was not replaced is the old 2d astroturf grass. (why they would bother upgrading everything else and not the grass eludes me). I was running this in windowed mode, and I was having a terrible slowdown problem, so I decided to reboot. I logged in again and walked around some, but I didn't see any of the new artwork.. I'll have to go looking for it again sometime. Then I remembered.. UOLBR has digital MP3 music, right? I blew the cobwebs off the old "music on/off" button, but was greeted by the plunking of MIDI music. I looked through the other option screens, but I did not find anything regarding MP3 music. For the time being, I gave up and looked up the MP3's myself, just to hear what audio goodness awaited me. I was not suprised to find the entire Ultima 9 soundtrack, and parts of the UO2 soundtrack. Out of the 35 or so songs on LBR, only 5 of them were original. Major bummer.

Overall, I like LBR.. but I liked the old 2D client as well. I assessed the value of the products.. I had paid 30 dollars for LBR, and I had recieved: A doll that I would sell on ebay in about 5 years, an instruction manual for a game I already know how to play, a map to a place where I know where everything is, a reference card for keys I already knew, A pocket comic book, and the game itself. The game itself gave me lands I already have access to, music I have already heard, and new artwork which I have yet to see.

Was it a good buy? I think so, but I cant imagine paying 30 dollars per account to upgrade several accounts.

How do you like LBR? Tell us here!

Nick SeafortWell well well, LBR's first day in office was very successful for EA. the units in my local babbages store have sold out, and their online store says that theyre on back-order. I did a quick check on the other retailers that I have in my area.. of course, your retailers may vary.

Would you believe that Wal-Mart dosen't consider PC games to be Video Games? Walmart.com dosent even have a PC software section! Well, I guess we just wont know about Wal Mart, but from personal experience they probably wont have LBR until June.

CompUSA moved its timetable forward.. now you can snag a copy from them on the 15th, previously their site had listed the 17th.

Best Buy still has the 14th listed for their stocking date... but perhaps the bright shinig star of all is Electronics Boutique!

EBworld has LBR available for purchase, online.. no back order or anything! Unfortunately, their site lacks the nifty inventory feature of gamestop.com, which means that you will probably have to dial up a store near you and talk to the nerdy guy behind the counter.

Nick SeafortThose of you die-hard Todd McFarlane fans out there probably pre-ordered your copy of LBR, and thus received your shrinkwrap-encased fresh-from-the-factory oh-how-it-tingles-the-olfactory-senses ove-hyphenated-adjective-here LBR box today.. or technically yesterday the 12th of February.

Those of you who are not experiencing what brown can do for you will have to go out to a store and buy it. This probably just became exceptionally easier today, as Babbages and Barnes and Noble should have them on-shelf bright and early in the morning (or late afternoon if you happen to be writing this article). Though many places carry all sorts of computer software, it appears that Babbages/Barnes and noble is the only company to stock the boxes on the actual day of their release. Best Buy reports that LBR wont be available until the 14th, and the last check I made with compUSA made put it sometime on the 17th.

I suppose they aren't the avid Todd McFarlane-oh-my-gosh-his-chainsaw-look-so-real-but-its-an-action-figure fans that I know that we all are. How's that for a valentines day gift?

The frightening world of reality, a contrast to our game

Nick SeafortThe following article is an investigative report. Factual evidence will be represented, and conjecture will be clearly marked. The topic of this report can be disturbing to some, please be forewarned of this.

Ultima Online is a game we play. It's a virtual world where real people interact with each other through a virtual forum. Not unlike the telephone, the internet (and to a lesser degree, Ultima Online) has brought strangers closer together, sometimes for better, and sometimes for worse.

Take in example a man, whom we will call "Braxton" and a woman who we will call "Caine". Both are avid internet users, and were even back in 1997 (the same year that UO was released). He lived in the southwestern United States, she in the northeastern United States. Seperated physically by over 800 miles and the mighty Mississippi, They met one another online and true love developed. Today they live together and enjoy a happy and prosperous relationship.. all because of present-day technology.

As with everything, there are people in the world who take something as sophisticated as the internet and Ultima Online, and they use it for their own unscrupulous purposes. You've seen them on the news.. Hackers, Exploiters.. you've probably met some griefers personally. There is however, a shocking development.. the news of which was broken by the UO Powergamers team and by the voice of an alleged victim. This development is of a somewhat sensitive nature, and parts of the following may be a shade vague.

There are people out there.. people who play UO with us who go beyond merely "unscrupulous" activities. They perform deeds which are vulgar, unethical, and not the least of which illegal. The person in this example (whom I will not name) is allegedly a Child Pornographer. The story goes that he would seduce or entice women using Ultima Online, and he would exchange what could only be considered as pornography with them. The original report of this came from one of this persons alleged victims.

Is it a true story? I don't know. There is very little evidence which points either way in this matter.. but the very fact that it can happen strikes most people as disturbing. Many of you readers out there are adults, you know from life experience how to determine who is trustworthy and who is not.. but UO isn't used exclusively by adults.

Continuing with the allegations from this story, some of the victims involved were reportedly children. From what I and my fellow reporters can gather, there was at least one young teen under the age of 17 who was engaged in the exchange of pornographic materials with this person. Again, this is all conjecture as based on the original report. Nevertheless, it becomes even more disturbing regarding the possibility of children being involved. Many of us have children or younger brothers and sisters who are a potential candidate for the advances of a person like that described in the UO Powergamers article.

One player with 5 younger siblings is Nero of Tenabrae. I asked him his thoughts on the story:

I have two younger sisters and two younger brothers, well three younger brothers if you count my ex-step brother. First I would tell my younger sibling to stop talking to that p
